2. Denotation and connotation.
Uniforms (Line 11)
Denotation: A form of dress showing rank or authority.
Connotation: The solders from earlier in the poem.
Interpretation: He ran past soldiers.
Flayed (Line 13)
Denotation: To skin or strip the skin off of.
Connotation: It’s not his skin, just his faith that’s stripped.
Interpretation: He was stripped of his faith.
Kill (Line 1)
Denotation: To slay.
Connotation: He meant to end his life.
Interpretation: He was going to hang himself but he stopped.
3. Define the situation of the poem.
A. The subject of the poem is Saint Judas.
B. The speaker in the poem is Saint Judas.
C. Nobody is addressed. He is mostly speaking to himself.
D. This poem is spoken with the times of Judas Iscariot when he was about to kill himself. This was very A.D. time and the human race was very barbaric.
Tone: The tone is rather somber. It’s Ironic that the fabled Judas Iscariot would cast off everything to save a man after he was already damned.
Essay
Saint Judas is the subject. Saint Judas is the speaker. Nobody is addressed. A man with nothing, who is damned yet, gives up all he has to save an innocent. Words are drawn from Christianity since this is clearly talking about Judas Iscariot. It is conversational. There is no dialect. There is no indirect reference. This is pretty direct. The tone is rather somber. It’s Ironic that the fabled Judas Iscariot would cast off everything to save a man after he was already damned. Really all the words are strait forward and I cannot even think of any 3 words that could be considered the most important. The thing that would be important would be at least a basic knowledge of the new testament of the bible to know the story of Jesus and the betrayal by Judas. This poem has a very somber and ironic tone. The whole thing is a giant reference to Judas Iscariot one of the fabled disciples of Jesus, the man who betrayed his friend and
