St. Louis
How has this experience influenced your view of St. Louis? This outing has influenced my view of St. Louis in many ways. Before this outing, I did not know that St. Louis was home to a large number of refugees. As mentioned in class, most of my time is spent in the SLU bubble, so I have never been exposed to the different ethnic cultures within the city. I enjoyed learning about the diversity within St. Louis, and I am excited to explore new ethnic restaurants. Also, this fact about St. Louis resonated with me, due to the fact that Des Moines is also home to many Bosnian refugees. I attended grade school with children who had traveled to America to escape the Bosnian Civil war. In fact, there is a community of Bosnian refugees that live a few streets away from me. As a child, I did not understand the classifications of a refugee or why they choose …show more content…
This connection is seen throughout Suk’s story. Throughout his story, it is clear to see that Suk is an intelligent man, who has an impressive resume. However, upon his arrival in America, none of his past seemed to matter. His label as a refugee caused marginalization within the community and in the workforce. Most people do not understand the classifications of a refugee, and they create assumptions that are not always correct. These assumptions may include that a refugee cannot speak English or that they are not educated. These assumptions stem from a lack of understanding about different cultures. Ultimately, they create stereotypes about cultures that are different than the typical western culture, which leads to marginalization within the community. Suk also faced marginalization within the workforce. Although Suk had degrees in engineering and law, he was unable to practice in America. Suk was marginalized, due to the fact that his occupations were limited based on predisposed opinions and not on

Most readers out there could relate to Hsiang’s situation as an American who gets treated like a foreigner. In the beginning of Hsiang’s article, in her sociology class, the teacher asked the students to volunteer their own experiences with racism or ethnic harassment (p.306). She imagined that the battle would be between white vs. minority, but to her surprise, most of the students told of being discriminated against were by members of their own race. Hsiang also stated, “People act disappointed that I can’t speak Japanese fluently,” a student of Mexican and Japanese ancestry in my sociology class complained this morning. “I don’t see anyone giving me credit for speaking fluent Gaelic” (p.307). This quote is from someone with mixed background and can appeal to people of mixed backgrounds who feel pressured to stick with their culture to keep up with people’s expectations. This quote also direct towards other people who do not have identity issues, explaining how it feels to be misidentified. Hsiang brought the attention by saying, “Asian Americans grow up experiencing enough difficulties living in a predominantly white country with the face of a foreigner” (p.307). Hsiang’s saying tells us that she is appealing to her audience that is not of mixed background, people that have never had identity…

Doug brought a 5-piece KFC snack pack and, one year, there were a dozen White Castle sliders. Cousin Bruce put a Domino’s pizza on the folding table, two slices already missing. He can do whatever he wants—Bruce is one of the few family members that still smokes. I mostly remember Bruce because, the first time I felt dread was when I thought, “I am never going to see you again,” when he shipped out for the war. Bruce came back from Viet Nam, but there are never enough cigarettes. These days, the church that Bruce’s part of the family goes to has sponsored dozens of Hmong and Somali refugees. No one really talks about it; discrimination, acceptance and love I mean.…

This week, Brandeis Immigration Education Initiative (BIEI), has come out with an event titled, “The Immigrant Experience at Brandeis,” which will consist of learning more about the different and unique immigrant experiences in the U.S. They organized a campaign that would display different portraits and original stories of the diverse students at Brandeis—very much à la Humans of New York (HONY). The event took place at SCC on February 4th, 2016, and it centered in proving that the immigrant experience is not one sole narrative as many would think. In fact, the photo installation tried to proved that there are immigrants in the U.S. from distinct countries, races, religions, social backgrounds, and personal experiences in one common place:…

On Tuesday, March fifteenth I attended the Women's Refugee Experience. There we heard from the women refugees living in southwest Ohio. The women refugees at the event were from Bhutan, Burundi, Iraq and Syria. I enjoyed hearing about the experiences of the woman’s travels and their stories actually made me rather emotional. Although learning about their experiences there was one major conflict at the event which was the language barrier.…

The first time I step a foot in Washington D.C. it was like I was in a history book. You could see history in every corner. The first stop was Martin's Luther King Memorial. There was a wall with different famous quotes from his "I Have a Dream," speech. You were surrounded with all his struggles for men to realize they were all created equally. Secondly, we got to visit The Holocaust Memorial. Once you go in those doors you could feel all the pain and suffer this people went through. You can't imagine how something this could happen. When I went through the shoe exhibit from the victims of the Holocaust you cannot contain the tears, because you see different size shoes from kids to grandparents. You feel their desperation, their fear, their…
