When the Native Americans and the girls from “St. Lucy’s” adapted to the European way of life, they both gained the ability to speak and read English. When the girls first came to “St. Lucy’s” they only knew how to speak in their native tongue, but with time, learned how to fluently speak and read English. One example of this is when the girls are at the ball with the “brothers” they were speaking in English to them. The Indians also gained this ability by getting educated by people from the English culture. Elected in office during this time Grover Cleveland, who was president in 1887, put the Dawes Act in action which converted them to Christianity, teached them to speak English, and let them live self-sufficient and independent. The girls…
Being admitted to the University of California, Berkeley was a shock to my family. Nevertheless, everyone was full of joy and support. My mother and father offered immediate advice for my well-being. Yet, I was full of uncertainty. Attending UC Berkeley was not within my plans. Being family oriented, I could not imagine leaving home. I could not picture myself 200 miles away from my family. Living in a city where the school campus itself is bigger than my town was inconceivable. However, becoming aware of the theme program Casa Magdalena Mora allowed me to consider UC Berkeley.…
Everyone is aware of the name Wake Forest University carries. Obviously, I too want to be part of the Demon Decan Community. Wake Forest embodies the community spirit that encourages intellectualism and promotes civic engagement. The biggest reason for transferring to Wake Forest University is the philosophy of educating the whole person. As an Aga Khan Foundation Youth Ambassador, I was heavily involved with sustainable projects that had a purpose of solving challenges the ambassadors identified in the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex. Neither of our projects were one day projects, or charitable in any sense. Because the Aga Khan Foundation focuses on sustainable development, the ambassadors make sure to model the work and “Think globally, act locally.” Rooted deep into Wake Forest’s community is the…
College was another story. It was difficult to transition to a new place where no one knew him or what had happened. Mike spoke of his freshman year at SMU saying, “I was just the scrawny kid in the wheelchair.” SMU was his school of choice because it was one of the two schools in Texas that were handicap accessible and because one of his friends offered to live and care with him. While at SMU, he made many friends even joined a fraternity, but he did not feel a sense of community there. He decided to transfer to Baylor during his sophomore year.…
With the countless options the school offers, I have been able to redefine myself and passions through field hockey, outdoor pursuits, rowing, and especially sailing. The extra-curricular programs at Shawnigan have gifted me a platform. Allowing myself to become a confident speaker eager to provide a voice to the student population, a trusted role model to those I have earned the respect of, and a positive yet humble individual in any…
My love affair with Mount Holyoke began quite innocuously, as many loves do. Exactly two years ago I received some mailings from the college—I originally began liking the school because of my intended major. However, in the last two years, I have found all the more reasons to deepen my adoration of Mount Holyoke College. The liberty of a liberal arts education will not only allow me to focus on my intended major but will also allow me to broaden my horizons to discover new areas of interest. My academic career at Mount Holyoke will be a drastic change from my high school career. Studying at Mount Holyoke College would be similar to discovering new land. I would arrive with purpose: the study of language will be my Plymouth Rock, my joy, but…
Ave Maria University is known as a prestigious institution of learning. Each and every young adult has the right to learn. This brings me back to the times when I was given the opportunity and pleasure to mentor grade school students in the sport of baseball. I took this opportunity to not only teach them the fundamentals of the sport, but I was also blessed with learning compassion and patience from these young enthusiastic learners. This opened a door for me to go on to mentoring underprivileged students at the University of Illinois at Chicago campus. This touched me so much that it would be an honor while attending Ave Maria University, to get involved in mentoring and volunteer work on campus and within the community. My academic career choice is aimed at giving back. It would be a privilege to study here, especially for students like myself, whose careers may take them anywhere. A degree with your institution is sure to open doors and opportunities for me, regardless of where I am.…
Symmetry can be found in many places or anyone in life. Symmetry makes a place or painting balanced. In the reading, I choose to analyze figure 6 which is St. Michael Weighing Souls. In the painting, you can tell it has a lot of symmetry present. When a painting isn't balanced well enough you can feel a sense of unbalancedness or one side being too heavy. Either by have too much on the other side or not enough. But in figure six you don't feel that heaviness anywhere because it is well balanced. For example in the painting of St. Michael Weighing Souls there are two things that make the painting balanced. In the painting, the person is holding a scale below and needed something above to make it balance and being symmetric he is holding a sword…
The figure of Christopher on display at the Middle Ages and Renaissance wing of the Rijksmuseum is an oak sculpture depicting the eponymous saint. Dated circa 1520 AD, the sculpture portrays Saint Christopher as a bearded man wading through a river with his right leg placed in front of his left. With both hands, he holds on to a staff crafted from a tree trunk. From this, Saint Christopher bends the right side of his upper body to lean slightly forward. He also looks up to the child on his back, who speaks to him with his right hand raised and his left hand holding on to a lock of Saint Christopher’s hair.…
Just as the AP course positively impacted me, with the assistance of the Woodford R. Porter Scholarship, I know I can have the same impact on the University of Louisville community. At the University of Louisville, I hope to earn my degree in chemical engineering. I do understand that this degree requires a lot of knowledge about mathematics. Because I was able to overcome difficult academic situations in high schools, I know I am better prepared to deal with these challenges in college. Furthermore, my experiences of struggling in my AP courses have helped me become more sympathetic to my peers. If I see one of my peers struggling, I will provide assistance to them because I know how hard it is to ask for help. By working with my peers, we can ultimately develop a friendship inside and outside the classroom. By developing these relationships, we can learn from one another. While I cannot change my peers’ perspectives about certain issues, I can introduce them to a new perspective, my perspective. By introducing my peers to my perspective, I have helped them become more self-aware as they can do the same for me. In essence, by attending the University of Louisville, I know I can uphold the University’s mission by improving my peers’ lives by sharing my own lived experiences in classrooms. By sharing my narrative and experiences, I know I will create a more diverse…
As I sat in the lobby of the newly built Anderson Center at the University of Mary Washington, I eagerly awaited for my college tour to begin. The tour took me through different academic, athletic, and residential buildings. I must say the campus was very immaculate, everything felt as if I were at home. There was no doubt in my mind that I was at a top notch place. The University of Mary Washington has many good qualities, including location, academics, and campus life; all schools should strive to be better than the rest, and UMW does just that.…
I want to transfer to Spelman college because it is time to make my dream tangible. My time during community college has molded me into an esteemed well-rounded student. Now my journey here has come to an end and I am ready to utilize all the skills and traits that I have developed when I transfer. I have obtained leadership and interpersonal communication skills, as well as efficient study habits. Also, I have worked with many children that I constantly encouraged to strive for more; regardless of their environment or circumstance. I want to transfer to Spelman to be an example to the children of my community. I want them to know that it is possible to keep pushing even when they are at their lowest because good fruit will eventually bear.…
Beaufort, South Carolina may be a very passive town, but it’s exactly where I should be when pursuing my Master’s. USC accepted me because during high school, I received remarkable grades while being in honors classes, and while having many different extra-curricular activities. I’m more focused here because throughout middle school and high school, I learned to flourish in such an environment. Beside that point, I’ve already started forming relationships with students and staff in the schools on the Laurel Bay military base. I would love to intern and possibly research in schools where I’m currently working. I would love to replicate research experiments previously done on Camp Pendleton and see how they may differ from a base in a much smaller town. Being in Beaufort will bring new perspectives to the table, as well as new research material. In the next five years, I would have already attained my MSW and would have moved to Jacksonville, NC. I want Jacksonville to be my permanent residence because it fulfills my professional demands, as well as my social desires. It is not too far from my parents, it's near a military base, and it is also only four hours away from the largest city in North Carolina, Charlotte. I would have…
At a young age, I was plucked from my birthplace of Fairbanks and moved down to Southeast Alaska with my mother. My formative years took place in Haines where I also graduated high school as an honor student. I then moved to Juneau in 2014 where I attended two years of college at the University of Alaska Southeast. It is my plan now to return to my roots in Fairbanks to continue my education. By returning, I will not only be provided a change of scenery, I will be reconnected with a handful of family members and nostalgically familiar surroundings. I believe Fairbanks has the opportunities I'm looking for to better myself and my future, so without hesitation, I am in…
Attending Kent State University was one of the best decisions I have ever made. As my undergraduate years have passed the anticipation of attending PA school has greatened with each year. Not only am I excited for the program that precedes my professional career, but am fully prepared through the rigorous curriculum that comes with a major in Biochemistry. I am fully confident in my own abilities,…
