1. In the beginning when the blind man came to their house for the first time, he judged Robert because he was blind. "And his being blind bothered me. My idea of blindness came from the movies. In the movies, the blind moved slowly and never laughed." The narrator changes his mind when Robert told him to draw the Cathedral on the paper.…
Four gunshots reverberated throughout the crowded streets of Saint Peter’s Square, May 13, 1981. A shocked man looked down at his blood-stained once white robe. He was rushed to the Hospital while his would-be assassin, Mehmet Ali Agca was detained until arrested. Within four days of being shot, Karol Wojtyla, more commonly known as Saint Pope John Paul the Great forgave the man from his hospital bed and later went and visited Agca and personally forgave the man that shot him. Millions of people were shocked by the Holy Father’s choice to visit the man that wished him dead, but in doing so, the Pope wordlessly showed his followers what it means to love and forgive others. At the time Pope John Paul II was the spiritual leader of almost 60 million Roman Catholics. He had already acquired a reputation as being a charismatic leader. People came from all over the world to be inspired by his message--that of sacrificial…
With minimal amounts of historical documentation, it is difficult to determine whether a church survived prior to Westminster Abbey (Internet Chronology). While the Venerable Bede provides no records of a pre-existing church, folklore attributes the establishment to King Serbert of the East Saxons (Internet St. Edward). He is also recognized for founding St. Paul's Cathedral in London (St. Edward). King Serbert built the Benedictine church in 616 AD, after a fisherman is said to have been on the Thames river when he witnessed a vision of St. Peter (Internet Saint Peter). St. Peter is given credit for allegedly consecrating the church himself (Internet St. Edward). One of the Twelve Apostles, the Gospel mentions that he was the first to profess his faith believing Jesus was the Son of God (Internet Chronology). Charters found in the Abbey support the existing folklore (Chronology). Records prove that King Offa made a grant for the monastery in 785 to St. Peter and the needy people of God in Thorney in the terrible, awful place which is called "act Westmunster"' (Chronology). The charter was also significant in first…

"Cathedral" by Raymond Carver tells us short story about a blind man who comes to visit his friend and her husband. In the story, even though the husband can technically see and has a normal sight, in the beginning of the story he is the one who shows the signs of true "blindness" through inability to see Robert beyond his blindness, incapability to communicate with Robert, him feeling uncomfortable and acting awkward around Robert. The husband does not realize how Robert 's blindness changes him as human being. Carver skillfully shows the occurrence of change in the personality of the husband from being very awkward around a blind man to coming to realization that Robert is a person and not just a blind man. In the story, "Cathedral" Carver brings out the concept of husband 's spiritual blindness and the theme of broke marriage to shows what is wrong with the modern world.…

Raymond Carver, Jr. was an American short story author and poet. He was born in 1938 and died in 1988. He was married twice, struggled with drugs and alcoholism, and was an unsuccessful writer early on in his career. It was not until his publication of “Cathedral” that he gained success. Carver even believed that “Cathedral was a watershed in his career, in its shift towards a more optimistic and confidently poetic style” (Arciniegas). “Cathedral” starts out slow, spending most of the short story on the back story of the narrator’s wife and a blind man. The story progresses with the three characters doing mostly everyday things, eating, talking, and drinking. While this happens, the narrator’s ideas of the blind are challenged little by…

The process by which Scripture has been preserved and compiled is one whose history is worth noting. The early church had many opportunities to share the Good News of Christ via word of mouth, but from the time of Christ’s resurrection until the mid-second century, there had not been a single culmination of writings considered to be essential for the purposes of teaching and spreading the Gospel. Increasing heretical opposition in conjunction with the need for a standard of living to follow gave rise to the formation of the New Testament Canon; however, this would not come without multiple false teachers and many arguments over what would classify as “inspired by God”. To seek the answer to one of history’s most important questions, we must understand what the canon is, how it was inspired and to whom authority was given in determining what would be included in such Holy Scriptures.…
Raymond Carvers Cathedral illustrates the point of view of a self-centered man, the narrator, who suffers from a mild lack of education and culture while being more than slightly close-minded and rude. These are observations that one can make by considering how he reacts to his wifes blind friend, Robert coming over at their house as well as by his perceptions of the blind man. The fact that the main character is also narrating helps as well when trying to capture his nature since we have access to his every thought. His unease towards the blind man appears under various forms throughout the short story but it also fades as the husband starts to ask more sincere questions to the blind man, as he takes a greater interest in him. At the end, the man realizes something, or more precisely, the blind man makes him understand something. For that reason, we can affirm that Carvers Cathedral is a story about the blind leading the blind for ignorance is a sort of blindness as it isolates one from the rest of the world and others emotions.…
In Raymond Carver’s Cathedral there is a lot of symbolism relating to the narrator’s close mindedness. In this world there are people that are physically impaired, but this does not limit them in connecting with people emotionally. Some people who are not impaired have a tougher time realizing that they are the ones spiritually blind and unable to connect with people. The narrator is a man who is a person who is spiritually blind and does not connect well with people, not even his own wife. This could be related to the machismo way of thinking about men. How is it that a man can live his life for so long and not realize he had been blind the whole time?…
Since the beginning, man has always had some form of faith. Whether it was worshiping rocks or praying to God. No matter what faith, they’ve always had a center of worship. Well when the middle-ages came around, Christian’s centers were the cathedrals where the bishops were placed. Cathedrals were the pinnacle of the European churches. They demonstrated the wealth and the power of the city’s Christian church. But with such extravagant attention placed into these structures, one can only wonder what it must have taken to create such detail and why these were built the way they were.…
The Medieval Church played a far greater role in Medieval England than the Church does today. In Medieval England, the Church dominated everybody's life. All Medieval people - be they village peasants or towns people - believed that God, Heaven and Hell all existed. From the very earliest of ages, the people were taught that the only way they could get to Heaven was if the Roman Catholic Church let them. Everybody would have been terrified of Hell and the people would have been told of the sheer horrors awaiting for them in Hell in the weekly services they attended.…
