you need to settle in to your role as a care worker. It will tell you what your responsibilities are as carer worker, the responsibilities of the manager to you and the responsibilities the individuals that visit this organisation on day to day bases.
It will also have the laws that you need to be aware of to insure you and the service user are both safe within this organisation.

1. Responsibilities of a Care Worker
*A care worker should always make sure that the Manager provides the correct equipment e.g. latex or non-latex disposable gloves, disposable aprons, Masks, protective clothing and hand sanitizer. This is required by law to prevent the spread of infection.
*Make sure to dispose of this items in the correct way and not leaving them lying around. This could become hazardous to service users and other members of staff.
*You are also responsible to make sure you have the correct training to use specialized equipment and procedures. E.g. First aid, administering medicine, food handling and preparation.
*To make sure you pass on relent information about service users, hazards and risks reports to other members of staff and management.
2. Responsibilities of the Employer or Manager.
*To provide information on work practices and procedure (see practice and procedures guide), hHhhhHHHHealth and Safety at work. This information will contain what to do in case of an emergency, how to seek first aid, any changes that might harm or affect health and safety in the work place, what has been put into practice to protect health and safety.
*To provide information about Health and Safety laws (this can be in the form of poster or a leaflet and they will both hold information of contact details of people how can help provide further information or advice.
*To provide correct training for employees e.g. first aid, administering medicine, health and safety procedures and food handling and preparation.
*To provide employees with the correct equipment e.g. latex and non-latex gloves, masks, aprons and protective clothing.
3. Responsibilities of Individuals
*Individuals have a responsibility to take care of their own health, safety and welfare.

4. Legislation relating to general health and safety in a social care setting.
Legislations are laws put in place by the government to protect Employer’s, you as an employee and visitor’s that enter your work place on a daily bases. This leaflet will have the laws and Regulations you will need to know to work safely in your place of work.
Health and Safety at Work act (1974)
This law aims to insure your work place is safe and free from hazards. Employers and employees share the responsibilities for: • Assessing risks before carrying out tasks. • Checking equipment for faults before use. • Using appropriate personal protective clothing. • Handling hazardous/ contaminated waste correctly. • Disposing of sharp implements appropriately.
Management of health and safety at work Regulation (1999)
This regulation explains to managers and employees what measures to take to keep staff safe.
The main focus of this regulation is risk assessment. The regulation explains how to conduct a risk assessment and what the assessment should contain.
Control of Substances Hazardous to Health 2002 (COSHH)
This law covers the handling of hazardous substances and gives directions on: • Storing cleansing materials correctly. • Label hazardous substances correctly. • Handling bodily fluids such as blood and urine appropriately. • Handling flammable liquids and gases appropriately.
Food Safety regulations (1995)
This regulation includes guidelines for both personal and general kitchen Hygiene: • Basic hygiene principles for handling and preparing food. • Food safety. • Handling toxic or corrosive substances/liquids appropriately.
Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences regulations 1995 (RIDDOR)
This regulation ensures injuries; diseases and dangerous incidents are reported appropriately: • Accidents and injuries must be reported objectively and accurately. • Diseases and dangerous incidents must be reported to the appropriate bodies. • Relevant paperwork must be
completed.
Manual Handling regulations (1992)
This regulation aims to keep staff safe when handling anything. Covering the safe moving and handling of equipment, loads and patients: • The environment must be prepared before anything is moved or handled. • Equipment must be checked for safety before use.
Human Rights act (1998)
This law came in to affect in October 2000. Its stats the basic human rights and that people have the right to take their complaints about how they have been treated to a UK court. • There are 16 basic human rights. They cover everyday things such as what a person can say and do, their beliefs and issues of life and death. • Rights and freedom that all people living in the UK have, regardless of their nationality or citizenship. • Although everyone has these rights, they can be taken away from a person if that person does not respect other people’s rights.

Health and safety that should only be carried out with special training.
First aid, administering medicine, health and safety procedures, food handling and preparation are all tasks that should only be carried out by staff that is specially train in these areas. If one of these tasks were to be performed by an untrained member of staff then they could cause serious infection or life threatening situations for other staff members or more importantly a service user. Always seek help for people how are trained in these areas.
