Stan Lee, a talented storyteller, benefitted the entertainment industry by promoting acceptance through his stories. Stan Lee explains his creation of the X-Men characters, "'I wanted them to be diverse. The whole underlying principal of the …show more content…
X-Men was to try to be an anti-bigotry story to show there's good in every person'" ("Lee X-Men"). By creating the X-Men characters, Lee was showing the readers that being diverse is not a negative trait. His intentions were to show that people who are different are not threats, they deserve to be treated equally.
Malcom X and Martin Luther King Jr. Were inspirations for Lee's characters Magneto and Professor X ("Civil Rights"). Lee and the comic book artist Jack Kirby used iconic advocates for civil rights and turned them into major characters in the X-Men comic books. The characters Professor X and Magneto embodied Martin Luther King Jr. And Malcom X's actions and personalities. In the comics Professor X and Magneto were also fighting for the civil rights of the mutants. There was a message in Lee's creation of the mutant characters; "In creating character who faced prejudice because of inborn differenced, Lee baked in an effectively malleable metaphor. ' The main objective was to show that bigotry is a terrible thing,' Lee says" ("Origins of X-Men"). The situation the mutants were in was a parallel to the situation that people of color faced. They both faced the issue of prejudice. Through his comics, Lee tried to combat the issue of discrimination and bigotry.
Not only did Stan Lee promote the acceptance of minorities, but he also benefitted the entertainment industry by creating complex characters and stories. Before Lee's comics, superheroes and their stories were simple- too simple. The characters did not have personalities and the plotlines were plain. The superheroes before were not relatable to the readers because their conflicts were fiction, but Lee gave the heroes problems that people in the real worl dealt with. Spider-Man was one of the first modern day superheroes. Peter Parker was an ordinary kid; he was a sophomore in high school who was a nerd and bullied. He was also not rich by any means. In the comic book The Amazing Spider-Man, the main character went through the same problems that the kids who were reading the comics faced. He had to find solutions to these problems just like normal teenagers.
The X-Men comic books was a story of mutants who had unbelievable abilities.
They were hated and actually hunted because they were different from everyone else. Anyone who experienced discrimination could relate to the X-Men characters. The publisher of Marvel Comics at the time wanted Lee to write the comics at a lower reading level because he thought that comics were for only children, but Lee fortunately did not follow his publisher's wishes. Lee came up with the idea of the Fantastic Four story line. These characters were superheroes while they kept their day jobs. They had different obstacles that readers had never seen heroes deal with before. Creating complex storylines engaged the readers and opened the comic book industry to more opportunities, like movies and television shows ("Modern
Comics").
