Star Food Healthy Express Makes 400th Placement in Schools Across USA

(1888 PressRelease) Star Food Healthy Express is the leader in vending reimbursable meals in schools across the USA. Healthy, USDA approved, multi-component breakfast, lunch and snacks are served in less than 20 seconds.

Miami, FL - Thanks to the addition of schools in Dallas, Texas; Knoxville, Tenn. and across Pinellas County Florida - there are now more than 400 Star Food Healthy Express machines feeding school children across the USA healthy meals for breakfast, lunch and snacks.

"This means as many as 100,000 meals are getting to kids every week of the 36 week school year," said Joe Gilbert, GM and Vice President of VE South, based in Fort Lauderdale. VE South is the parent company of Star Food. "This is a very conservative estimate and does not reflect the full capacity of the machines."

"That's about 3.6 million meals a year for kids who qualify for free or reduced cost meals at school."

"Before Star Food many kids just did not have a chance to eat and make it to class - our machines serve healthy reimbursable, multi-component meals in less than 20 seconds," said Gilbert.

High-tech and high- touch works for students say the school foodservice executives nationwide who utilize Star Food Healthy Express machines in their schools. It works for schools too by better utilizing their nutrition staff and offering meal opportunities when the cafeteria might not be open, like early morning or during after school programs.

According to Bob Gottlieb, Director of Educational Services for Star Food, schools across the USA are looking for options to "Feed More Kids" and are turning to Star Food, the leader in reimbursable meal vending for schools.

"We just finished the School Nutrition Association's big show and were swamped by school nutrition experts wanting to learn more. We were the first to introduce this concept 8 years ago, and the schools understood right away

This includes milk, one entree, and two sides, but the price does not correlate to the quantity, nor the quality of this food. For what is received, it would be better to spend that lunch money on healthier options from your local grocery store. If school lunch wasn’t bought, a loaf of bread could be purchased for $3, a jar of jelly for two dollars, a jar of peanut butter for three dollars, a bag of carrots for two dollars, and a bag of celery for two dollars, for a total of twelve dollars. This averages out to cost about one dollar and seventy cents per day, if this food lasted for seven days, which costs more than a dollar less than a school lunch. This amount of food would last students longer than a week, it would satisfy their hunger, and would be much healthier.…

Recently there has been revisions to the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and schools were required to overhaul their entire menus to provide the students with healthy and nutritious foods including fruits and vegetables. The new school lunch rules are part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 which has been implemented this fall. (Post Standard) The Hunger Act allows the USDA the opportunity to make reforms to the school lunch and breakfast programs. With these revisions come strict guidelines from the federal government that each school district must follow in order to receive funding and reimbursement (National School Lunch Program, 2012, August p. 1). In this essay i will be comparing the positive and negative effects of these recent revisions to the NSLP. I will then discuss whether or not these changes are beneficial to the children receiving the meal and whether NSLP is leaving children hungry or helping children make healthy food choices.…

Schools alone cannot solve the obesity epidemic in our nation, but they do lay a strong foundation for establishing healthy eating habits and ensuring physical activity. Schools play an expediential piece because 95 percent of children are enrolled in school and it allows us to reach the majority of children in society. Endorsing physical education and healthy eating has been endorsed by schools, this is not a new expectation. Research connects shows that healthy eating habits not only assist with internal health but links physical activity, nutritional programs and academic performance. Investigations performed by care2.com reveals “since students began eating healthier lunches, test scores and grades have significantly improved across the school, far fewer students have been suspended or expelled, and behavioral issues decreased to such an extent that the school found it no longer needed to keep a police officer on campus to respond to out-of-control students”. The state of school lunches has been a point of debate for many since Michelle Obama’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act signed into law December of 2010, giving full authority to the USDA in setting the nutritional standards for all foods regularly sold in school lunch lines, stores, and vending machines. The law was set to provide additional funding to meet the updated standards, however, the cost was severely underestimated. Using data provided by Medicaid, eligibility for the free or reduced school lunch programs has seen a definite increase, although participation has not (Lee, 2010). In a press release, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius was quoted saying “The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act is a significant step forward in our effort to help America's children thrive and grow to be healthy adults... By increasing the number of students eligible to enroll in school meal programs and improving the quality of food served, this legislation simultaneously tackles both hunger and the obesity levels currently affecting too many communities across this nation.” I would like to draw attention to her careful wording of “...step forward in our effort...” A subject as incredibly important as the nutrition of…
