Unlike the stomach sleeper, the side sleeper has many pressure points against the mattress like the hips, legs and shoulders. With a firm mattress, they could end up with pains in these areas that cause the spine to be out of alignment. A side sleeper needs a slightly softer mattress, so that the pressure points can sink into the mattress to keep the body aligned properly.
