John D. Rockefeller Senior is one of the most famous industrialists to date. His fame is well deserved, through decades of hard work that brought prosperity to the American petroleum industry. Rockefeller has been called philanthropist, "great man" 1 "industrial statesman , robber baron" , thief and other titles of both pleasant and unpleasant nature. His ways of conducting business brought him fame, fortune, and a lawsuit that broke up the Standard Oil Company. Despite these questionable business practices, John D. Rockefeller and the Standard Oil Company greatly contributed to the economy, and the well-being of the United States and its people. "The life of John D. Rockefeller, Sr., was marked to an exceptional degree by silence, mystery, and evasion."…
Challenging myself to take Ap courses and volunteer at senior living I intend to have a high grade point average and attend a great college. My long term goal is to get accepted to a nice college, major in Biology, go to medical school, leading on to my career of an Orthopaedic Surgeon. I have study every night to maintain a high grade point average and challenging myself with AP and honors courses. I have also talk with college professor on college visits about what to expect and how to get to where I want.…
I can definitively, and honestly state that Paul L. Foster School of Medicine is the school of which I have the greatest interest in attending. For eighteen years, I have called the border city of El Paso my home. Our amiable and uniquely culturally diverse population is the reason that I have found living in El Paso to be extremely comforting. The loving nature of the people of El Paso allowed me to develop many friendships, which helped create countless beautiful memories. I want nothing more than to continue my education in El Paso, and to watch this city continue to evolve. Further, I wish to practice medicine in this community which has given so much to my family and me.…
My personal nursing mission statement is changing and developing as my career advances, however, one core piece will remain constant. I will strive to provide the best, safest, most ethical and compassionate nursing care that I can for all patients and family members with whom I come in contact. I began my post-high school academic career as an accounting major. I enjoyed the challenge of manipulating a report until I had balanced. I thought I had found my calling. As my first semester was nearing an end, I found myself contemplating the thought of sitting behind a desk all day. I wondered if I would find fulfillment in this work as a career? The more I pondered this thought, the more I realized that this was not the right career path for me. I saw images of the medical assistant program in the catalog at the school where I was attending. I could not shake the thought of the medical field for a profession. I attained my medical assistant degree and worked in the field for 10 years. The longer I worked, the more I realized that there was more that I wanted to do, but my current degree restricted me from going further. I researched nursing school programs and selected one with a night/weekend program that would allow me to continue working full-time during my studies. I have a family that I needed to continue to provide for and this seemed to be the best fit. My nursing school decision was fortified when I was selected for an award by the nursing faculty from all four semesters for excellence in the clinical setting. After graduation, I began my nursing career working as a case manager for orthopedic worker’s compensation patients. During this time I gained critical knowledge of the importance of clear documentation, the ever-changing requirements of insurance companies and an extra measure of compassion for…
Ever since my freshman year of high school, I’ve wanted to be a member of the National Honors Society. Being a part of the National Honors Society meant that I would have done well in both my studies and contributing time in my community. In order to reach my goal, I took multiple honors and AP classes to enhance my knowledge. These classes were indeed rigorous and there were many occurrences where I stayed up late doing homework or studying. During these times I felt like giving up, but the passion I had for conquering my goal burnt too brightly. The hard work I’ve placed on my studies has certainly paid off because now I’m at the top 5% in my class with a 3.8 GPA. Also throughout I’ve helped my community in multiple ways such as volunteering…
One of the challenges I may run into while obtaining my degree in Nursing is trying to maintain a 3.8 in order to get into nursing school. However, I've come up with many different strategies to help me motivate myself when I'm feeling stressed about this. I plan to stay on top of my work and my social life has to come last in order for my grades in order to achieve a 3.8 GPA. Another obstacle of mine is having difficulties with the many science classes I will have to take. To overcome this obstacle, I plan to attend every SI session there is for my Biology and Chemistry classes and ask my professor for extra help during their office…
After two unforgettable years at Rockland Community College, I gained my associates in Math and Science. During my time at this college, I managed to recognize my full potential, and received outstanding grades every semester. Although many times I had some difficulties, I continued to push myself more and more each day. Fortunately, I had some help. I had this anatomy and physiology professor who changed my entire perspective of education. She had strong character, and was extremely intimidating. Due to her character, I wanted to make sure I did my best in…
As a young teenager graduating from high school over 17 years ago, I had always vision myself attending a university and pledging in a sorority. However, things didn’t go according as plan. I got caught up in this world called life and became very content not noticing that the life I had always dreamt of for myself was passing me by. Although, I received my Certified Nursing Assistant licensed back in 2001, I knew this wasn’t the career path that I wanted to stay in. I attended Chattanooga State twice before, yet I never finished. I’m an individual that always procrastinate and seems to start things but never finished. As a result of this, I feel that now is the right time for me to attend Chattanooga State. Attending Chattanooga State now will help me improve my career, lead by example and most of all prove to myself that I for once I can accomplish and finish something.…
A career in the healthcare field may be a logical choice to many because of the pay or the general supply of jobs available, but to me I want to be a part of this field because of its sense of community and the aspect care. My ultimate goal is to become an Ultrasound Technician and to eventually get a degree in another related health career. I plan on attending Oregon Institute of technology, since it’s the only school in my state that offers this. If I have the power to gain more knowledge, then I will pursue this broader perspective even if this means becoming a Nurse or a Medical assistant, I will work hard to give back to my community. I understand that I don’t have the finances to attend a school that offers this career, but I have the…
My entire high school career, I've been sedulously working up to the moment I can finally say I am an EMT! EMT is one of the toughest curriculum on campus, we're the Marines. Most students don't have what it takes to be in such a challenging course, that’s why there are only fifteen of us. However, to stay enrolled in the course, we need an assessment grade of eighty or better. Pushing us to study nonstop to get the best grade possible. So, I feel if I can pass EMT, I can pass anything I set my mind to.…
As an active duty member of the Army, I had little time to invest into my education and clinical experiences, especially when pursuing health science. Almost all science classes in my area were only available during my primary working hours. It wasn’t until I transferred to the Reserves this past year that I was really able to pursue this path full-time. In order to apply to medical school this year, I took my MCAT prior to completing all my prerequisite coursework. This resulted in a lower score than desired. Since summer of this year, I have been able to complete 22 credit hours, and am currently working on completing 12 additional credit hours, primarily in biological…
In August of 2015, I began a Health Science course to obtain my certification to be a certified nurse aid or CNA. The course was profoundly difficult and rigorous. Many hours were spent studying and practicing skills in the lab. Eventually, these skills were taken to a long term care facility, where I performed these skills on real people rather, than on a dummy. After, obtaining a certain amount of clinical hours and also class hours, the certification test came. The test consisted of two parts: a multiple choice test and a skills evaluation. Hours after taking the test the results came in and I discovered that I had passed. As soon as I saw the results the weight of the world was lifted off my shoulders and I was able to breathe, I realized…
When I graduated high school, I was determine to become a nurse. I didn’t have much support because many people doubted me, but I didn’t let that put me down. I applied for many colleges and surprisingly got accepted to all of them, then I chose UMSL. When I started my freshmen year at UMSL, I knew that this journey was not going to be easy. But because of my determination I was able to passed all my prerequisite class . I remember when I applied for clinical, I was afraid that I wouldn’t make it. I pray every night because I wouldn’t know what to do if I didn’t make it to clinical. Then I received the letter from the college of nursing, and when I saw the word “congratulation”, I was more than happy. I don’t even know how to describe that…
Sometimes, what we yearn for can seem too far away or just too hard to reach. As I attempt to reach my goals I may face some barriers. If I want to reach my goals, I will have to get around them. Time management and finances are two barriers that prevent me from completing some of my short-term goals, i.e. bachelor’s degree and certification in ACLS and PALS in a well-timed manner, I work 10 days in a 2-week period from the hours of 3pm to 11pm. With work occupying most of my time its hard for me to focus on more than 1 class at a time and to make it to a certification class. As for my long term goals, having the suitable qualifications to acquire and hold the title of certified oncology pediatric nurse and nurse practitioner can be a barrier. Attaining a job in adult oncology to fulfill the requirement to have completed 1,000 hours of practice, something I cannot get without being qualified to be hired on an oncology unit would inhibit me to achieve my goal as a certified oncology pediatric nurse. Achieving success to accomplish my goals will require commitment and…
The reason that I chose to attend Onondaga Community College is that I want to better myself by receiving a furthered education at a college level and also I have an interest in the nursing at this college. The planning process that I went through was simple, but time consuming. First I was accepted into the college, then I was left with the obvious choice of attending or not. Deciding to attend college here opened up many tasks that I needed to accomplish, such as finding housing, loans, financial aid, and selecting the classes that are necessary to allow me to achieve my goals. I have recently graduated from high school, and my educational background is still fresh in my mind and knows how to accomplish my goals. Previously I held a position as a certified nursing assistant at a nursing home and the responsibilities of holding a job prepared me for what the “real” world is going to be like when I go to college. I have a pretty basic schedule this semester, it is not too demanding so I have learned to manage my classes and study times well. I am taking HEA – 106 with Professor Jenkins, RDG – 093 with Professor Bianchi, RDG- 093L with Professor Irwin, MAT- 114 with Professor DeFazio and ENG -099 with Professor Starkweather. So far my first impression of the first semester has been a little overwhelming at the amount of work they give you to accomplish in the small amount of time. I am a little bit worried about my algebra course that I am in because I always found math a major struggle for me. I feel that commitment is the main key to success in college and those who are not committed will not be able to achieve their goals and become successful.…
