communication and tactical skills to mitigate unending tensions that characterized correctional facility dormitories. Currently, I have over Four years experience in Inpatient Psychiatric units where I have been able to improve on my communication skills to maintain therapeutic milieus. Pathophisiology, neuropathological knowledge acquired from my undergraduate studies and developed upon working as a mental health registered nurse gave me a better understanding of the etiologies of mental illness and how best to manage psychiatric issues to afford my patients the qualities of life they deserve.
My areas of interest are Schizophrenia and Schizoaffective disorder which are the most serious mental illness due to the great distress they cause the patients and their families.
They have considerable socioeconomic and vocational impact on the patients in particular denying them good quality life and preventing them from contributing positively to the society in general. These people lack the emotional, moral and financial support required due to the negative stigma attached to mental illness which prevent them from getting their health care needs met.
PMHNP is an advanced specialty in nursing that employs the nursing process to assess individuals and their families to develop nursing diagnosis from the assessments and treat clients or their families with mental health issues. Psychiatric Mental Health Nurses apply their therapeutic skills in both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment of clients via medication prescription and individual, group or family psychotherapy. They put up a plan of care that is client specific, evaluate their progress as treatment proceed and make modifications to their care plans as
needed.
In the same vein, obtaining this degree at the University of Maryland School of nursing will prepare me clinically to interpret and utilize health care researches in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of my clients. It will enhance my clinical decisions in patient care and bolster my leadership potentials within health care institutions. The degree will better prepare me to play a profound role in practice evaluation, quality improvement, development of policies and health care reforms.
