In-Class Essay

One excuse that I’ve previously accepted from myself- and for a very long time, is that it’s okay if I wait to go back to school. That I should consider other options for a major and take time off from college until I was sure of major I would be happy with and is easily obtainable. I have self-doubt in myself of being able to pursue the major and career path I would like to. Thoughts of trying a new, easier, less demanding major that is more easily obtainable are all reasons I’ve accepted from myself to excuse taking time off from school. However, how I planned to stop

The reason I did not finish college back in 2004 was not only due to laziness. I got married and pregnant so I thought I would have a “really good excuse” to stop my higher education, stay at home for some years and take care of the child. My philosophy was, I would have all the time in the world, to go back and learn, however, I somehow forgot how time was running by.…

I’m the Happiest man alive” this is what I was saying to myself on 16 May 2013 as my eldest daughter’s name was called and she walked a crossed the stage in the auditorium of University of Missouri Saint Louis. (Franklin, 2013) “Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning”. Four years ago my daughter graduated high school and I was unable to attend because of my military obligation of being deployed overseas. On the day of the graduation I contacted my family via Skype and after speaking to my wife and other children my eldest daughter finally sat in front of the computer so I can…

    College: Is It Worth It?

In today’s society teenagers have been raised with an image in their heads that they must attend college after graduating high school. Parents, teachers, and society have made us feel that going to college right after graduating high school is the only thing that we could do with our lives. That taking a year off to decide what you want to do or maybe even not going at all would be unacceptable and “the end of the world as we know it”. The main reason most teenagers go to college is because they feel that they are obligated to, or that “It’s the right thing to do.” In the essay that Caroline Bird wrote “College is a Waste of Time and Money”, she states that students go to college because”…Mother wanted them to go, or some other reason entirely irrelevant to the course of studies for which college is supposedly organized.” (481)…

Returning to school is hard, but returning at age 43 is the hardest decision that I have ever made in my life. Growing up I always felt that I was never smart enough to advance myself in anything, yet alone school. After working many jobs and not climbing fast enough or having the required qualifications for opportunities; I have decided to return to school because I want to make a better life not only for myself, but also for my family. I do not want to have any regrets about not finishing school or “ I should have done this “ while I was younger. I want to be able to provide for my present and future family, and not being able to give them the things they need and want is a big concern of mine.…

I think returning back to school to complete my degree was a very rational decision for me to make. We are sometimes told that experience is the key to getting the perfect job, but in my years in the work force I have learned that it is not always the case. Employers will sometimes use the fact that you do not have a degree against you and I refuse to let that happen.…

As I think back over my life and the many decisions I have made, it reminds me of a quote by Brigitte Nicole. And she said, “You will know you made the right decision when you feel the stress leaving your body, your mind, and your life”. I have had many choices and have made many decisions. In all honesty, some turned out well, and others, let's just say that we win some and we lose some. In either event, I am glad that I did not stop making choices, and as a result, I have made one of the best decisions of my life by returning to school. There are numerous reasons for me doing so, first of which is the desire to better myself. Second is my need for rewarding work. The third is my yearning to help the less fortunate. I have concluded that this life changing decision is not only for me, but it will trickle down and effect all those around me. My choice to come back to school will give me a career, influence my children, and impact the lives of people I don’t even know yet.…

After reading the article "Choosing a College Major,” I feel more at ease with the decisions I will be making concerning my major and future career. I was surprised to learn that most people will change careers around four or five times throughout their life. The textbook reading has helped broaden my viewpoint on my major and career. This book has showed me that one major won’t always lead you to one particular job and that traditional reasoning could impede my career planning. By using the chaos theory, I can consider what I know, what I can’t know, and what I can learn in order to make reasonable decisions in my life. The activities throughout this book have helped me narrow down key themes, skills, interests, values, and other important areas of my life.…

As I entered my new life as a college student I had no idea what to expect. It is something that you have to enter not knowing if you are prepared or not. Finding out who you are is about experiencing what college has to offer. My best self can be accomplished easily if I keep my mind on the right track. I will go to class and work my hardest to make the best grades that I can. To me listening and taking in what the professor has to say is highly rewarding. Most people don’t show up because they think it is pointless. I feel a bit of confidence in myself knowing I obtain the will to dedicate myself to my studies. I usually make it a goal to try something…
