Static Electricity
Electrostatic Field

• An electrostatic field is a phenomenon that is very similar to a magnetic field. When an object is electrically charged, it creates an electrostatic field. If an object has an excess of electrons, then it's considered to have a negative charge. If an object has fewer electrons than its surrounding environment, though, it's considered to be positively charged. Just like with magnetic fields, two objects that are oppositely charged will attract each other. This scientific truth is the core of electrostating painting, which uses electrostatic fields to paint metal objects quickly, efficiently and with practically no cleanup.

Setup

• Electrostatic painting uses some very specific tools in order to paint a metal object using the attraction of oppositely charged electrostatic fields. First of all, specially formulated paint is mixed with a chemical catalyst and is then given a positive charge. The metal object that's going to be painted (and it must be a metal object for this process to actually work) is then grounded by having a wire attached to it. Since the paint and the metal object are now oppositely charged, with the paint being positive and the object being negative, the paint will be attracted to the metal object as if it were a magnet.

Painting

• Once the setup and all of the charging is completed, it's time for the actual painting process to begin. The positively charged paint is sprayed toward the metal object, which draws the paint toward its surface. This attraction is so strong that if an object (say a metal rail) is only sprayed from one side, the charge will actually pull the paint around so that it covers the entire metal surface. This method requires very little in the way of protection, since drop cloths won't be necessary most of the time. The process can produce some bad odors, though, so it's recommended that electrostatic painting be done outdoors or while there are few people around

As I rub the balloons in my hair, I am picking up positive charges from my hair, which are electrons. The static charge produced will remain active on the balloons, so when they are stuck to the wall by attraction, and then repel one another. Given that the fundamental laws of nature tells us that no charge can be created nor destroyed, I think of the balloons as holding two magnets with the same negative…

A charged object will attract an uncharged object until they touch, and then they will repel one another. When charged objects attract uncharged objects, such as when the negatively charged plastic comb or fur attracted the paper, the negatively charged comb/fur repelled some of the electrons in the paper. This results in a redistribution of charges in the paper so that one side is more negative than the other side. The net effect is that the paper is attracted to the comb/fur. This also applies to the balloon attracting an uncharged wall. When a charged object is placed near an uncharged object, its charges rearrange themselves. In other words, those charges attracted to the charged object move towards the charged object and those charges repelled move away. This effect is known as polarization.…

Everyone loves to stick balloons to the wall with static electricity. Balloons are made of natural latex. Static electricity is a build-up of electricity in one area or on an object. There are three main parts in electricity protons, electrons and neutrons. When testing static electricity in hair with balloons, it is important to understand static electricity, hair pigments, and balloons.…

Electric current is the flow of electric charge. Some materials become electrically charged when rubbed together. A substance that gains electrons becomes negatively charged, while a substance that loses electrons becomes positively charged. Charges that are the same (positive and positive or negative and negative) repel, while unlike charges (positive and negative) attract. Charged objects are able to attract small-uncharged objects toward them, such as pieces of paper. Electrical charge can be created by rubbing things together or touching them to other objects with greater charge than their own.…
