For example, my first job that I had working at a fast food restaurant while I was still in high school, and the manager would have to gather all our sales data to determine how our schedule will be for the following week. Another example of how statistics are used in business is when companies are looking to release a new product. There are a lot of different types of statistics that are used all the time in all different types of business fields and many people really don’t realize it. Statistics is a mathematical science pertaining to the collection, analysis, interpretation or explanation, and presentation of data. It is applicable to a wide variety of academic disciplines, from the physical and social sciences to the humanities. Statistics are also used for making informed decisions – and misused for other reasons – in all areas of business and government. Statistical methods can be used to summarize or describe a collection of data; this is called descriptive statistics. In addition, patterns in the data may be modeled in a way that accounts for randomness and uncertainty in the observations, and then used to draw inferences about the process or population being studied; this is called inferential statistics. Both descriptive and inferential statistics comprise applied statistics. There is also a discipline called mathematical statistics, which is concerned with the theoretical basis of the subject. Stats or statistics are used in all sports as well as in all aspects of life. Statistics is used in sports to measure a players ability in specific areas of the game. Statistics, as defined by Bennett, Briggs and Triola (2003) "is the science that helps us understand how to collect, organize and interpret numbers or other information (data) about some topic," (pg. 2). Statistics is an essential component in the ultimate delivery of health care. Health care professionals no longer live in the mindset where procedures are done simply because they have always been done that way; rather the current trend is leaning towards evidence-based standards of care, including policies and procedures. The process and collection of data leads to implementation of practice which increase awareness of health care professionals thereby improving outcomes of the patients served.…

“Statistics is defined as a branch of mathematics dealing with the collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of masses of numerical data.” (m-w.com) Or, mathematical equations used to figure out what is happening in the world. So, why do we use statistics on a daily basis and how are they important? Statistics shape your life whether you know it or not. We use them in weather forecasts, preparations for emergencies, medical studies, genetics, disease predictions, Insurance, political campaigns, stock market, and quality testing. If you are anything like me, you check the weather every evening to figure out what you are going to prepare and wear for the next day. Forecasters use weather models, these models are built by using statistics, which compare conditions from the past with future weather patterns. While watching the weather channel you happen to notice a strip going across the television. It calls for tornado warning in your area. There are emergency teams that prepare and train on how to gear up and be ready for the occurrence of such tornado. These teams rely on statistics to point them in the direction of the occurring danger.Scientists must show a statistically valid rate of effectiveness before any drug can be prescribed to a patient. Statistics provide a sturdy base for every medical study you hear about. People suffer from diseases everyday so statistics are used to determine the chances of a child being affected by the same disease as their parent(s.) by the study of their genetic make-up. Watching the news you happened upon a broadcast about the a disease. The reporter spills off some statistics, this is to give you the watcher a better idea of your chances of being affected.…

Let’s take an example. Think about what the purpose of the SAT is. College admissions committees use the test as part of the admissions procedure. Why? They use it because there is a positive correlation between SAT scores and college GPAs. Individuals who score high on the SAT tend to have higher college freshman GPAs; those who score lower on the SAT tend to have lower college freshman GPAs. This means that knowing students’ SAT scores can help predict, with a certain degree of accuracy, their freshman GPA and thus their potential for success in college. At this point, some of you are probably saying, “But that isn’t true for me—I scored poorly (or very well) on the SAT and my GPA is great (or not so good).” Statistics only tell us what the trend is for most people in the population or sample. There will always be outliers—the few individuals who do not fit the trend. Most people, however, are going to fit the pattern. Think about another example. We know there is a strong positive correlation between smoking and cancer, but you may know someone who has…
