My Dad is an immigrant from Ireland.
When he was 23 he was traveling the world. When he came to America, he was looking for a job and to escape the religious troubles in Ireland. Ireland’s jobs were not good and there was a lot of religious trouble between Catholics and Protestants in the North. He met my Mom and decided to stay and work to become a citizen. He got his green card, then started his own business. My parents got married and had 3 children. He says he’s living “The American dream.”
The Catholic Catechism says that a good government has two duties. The first is to welcome anyone out of the respect for the human. The second duty is to implement laws and secure borders. In January 2003 Catholic Bishops wrote a letter, it is called “Strangers No Longer: Together on the Journey of Hope.” It addresses the issue of immigration and says that people have the right to find somewhere to live to survive and support their
families.
Although America is a Nation of immigrants, there are many illegal immigrants. People flee their countries in hope of a better life. I think that people should be allowed to immigrate to a different country if their country is not giving them the opportunity or freedom they need, as long as they do it legally. When people start coming over illegally it becomes a problem because they start taking away jobs from citizens of that country and they don’t have to pay taxes, which is not fair to all the people that do have to. My religious values influence my opinion because the Catholic Church wants to allow anyone but countries also have the right to have laws on immigration.
Immigration is a very important topic in many countries. Many people leave their country in hope of a better life. My dad is a good example of that, he left Ireland in hope of a better job and better religious opportunity. That’s why I am very thankful for immigration. If it wasn’t for the ability for people to immigrate I wouldn’t be here.
