Steinway & Sons case study
BUS4006W Module: Change Consulting

Assignment 1 – To be handed in on 13 May 2014.

Please read Application 5-1 (STEINWAY’S STRATEGIC ORIENTATION).

The CEO of Steinway & Sons has contacted you.

He invited you for an initial conversation to see if you would be able to assist him with the challenges he is currently facing in the organisation.

You had an hour meeting with him. During this time he elaborated on the following:

The fact that he is really passionate about the work that they do and that he really loves the piano business.
His concern that this may be a dying trade.
He is worried that the workers will be joining other companies, where they may be receiving higher salaries, but these companies do not provide the quality of training and artisan support that they have at Steinway & Sons.
He would like you to help and find out why people are leaving and what they can do to stop this.

Your impression of the conversation was that he is concerned and seems willing to give his support during the process.

You have to write a proposal to him as a prospective client. In order to pre-empt the role that you would like him to play, should you work together, you also have to refer to the different consulting approaches.

You know that he will not have a lot of time to read through a long winded argument, yet at the same time you want to make your points clearly and provide him with sufficient information in order to make a decision and understand what the process may entail into the future.

Your proposal should be well integrated and not exceed 4 pages.

I got the chance to interview a senior who goes to Casco Bay High School. His name is Zack and he's been at Casco bay since freshman year and this is his 4th and final year at Casco Bay. He's pretty tall and has short-ish red hair. When my whole class met up with seniors to interview I went and found him and everybody and their partner scurried off to start their interview. We went over to a big carpeted area called the great space. We went over to to a corner of the room I grabbed a comfy padded chair with a gold wooden frame.Zack grabbed a short plastic chair made to sit at for the keyboard in the room. Zack is wearing a flannel and I am too, I'm a bit nervous and he seems calm and ready. Around us other groups are starting, noise fills the air from other…

Suren has many activities to juggle during the week, including homework, an extracurricular math team, and some sports activities. Recently, she also became the editor of the school newspaper due to her recognition as a talented writer. Despite this schedule, she is always able to find enough time to practice piano in order to participate and thrive in several piano recitals and competitions each year. Each week she takes an hour-long piano lesson with me late in the evening that often lasts for well over that hour and her attention is still very much focused on the considerable details that we cover. To be able to work with a person like this is a rather uncommon treat for me as a teacher. For this reason, Suren is very inspirational to me.…
