STEP BY WICKED STEP
I choose a short story entitled, “Step by Wicked Step” written by Anne Fine. She had been named twice in the British Book Awards as Children's Author of the Year which was in 1990 and 1993. This novel was published in 2000, but the original copy was published in 1995.
The title and the book cover seemed a bit frightening and mysterious. Actually I like to read romance novels, not this type of novel because I expected this novel to be a horror novel. At first I do not want to choose this novel because I thought the English was difficult for me to understand.
The author, Anne Fine used many descriptive languages in this novel. “…and then another flash shot is generously across the sky.” , on page 7. Here the author wanted to describe the situation at the Old Harwick Hall in interesting way of language. From this quote, I could imagine that the scene at the Old Harwick Hall was stormy as described by Anne. She also used this descriptive language to portray the dark scene at Old Harwick Hall. “..black and I can see nothing.” , on page 6. The dialog shows me that it was too dark until the character could not see anything in the Old Harwick Hall.
One of main characters that had caught my attention is Richard Clayton Harwick. I said that because Richard was a strong boy and he really loved his family. When his father was dying, Richard’s mother told him to be strong as shown on page 17, “No tears, my dearest..”. This shows me that Richard had to be strong to continue his life without his father at such a young age. On page 18, I found his father’s last wishes for Richard, “You are now the man of the house.” . From this quote I could say that Richard had to take care of his mother and sister because he was the only man in the house after the death of his father. He was so young at that time but he had to carry on a big responsibility.
The main theme of this short novel is the important of love
