Stereotypes And Misconceptions
Millennials are the largest and most educated generation the world has seen so far, but they are labeled as the “laziest” due to harsh stereotypes and misconceptions from the generation before. Stereotypes generalize groups of people based off the actions or appearances of a small percentage of those in the group. Stereotypes may also be formed from the way the group used to be in the past, but not in recent times. However, misconceptions are views that have no factual evidence or basis to be drawn upon. Sadly, misconceptions and stereotypes generalize large groups of people which commonly leads to these groups to be misunderstood. It is important to know that although stereotypes and misconceptions have a negative connotation, they can be …show more content…
Therefore they are created and spread with no backing or proper research to support them. Misconceptions are developed through assumptions and are commonly incorrect. Therefore groups can easily be pegged for an perception that is blatantly wrong. Misconceptions are commonly due to the fact that people tend to believe what they are told, rather than doing research for themselves. The way children are raised is a breeding ground for misconceptions due to the fact that people tend to raise their children off the principles their parents raised them. Children for example are often taught that people with large tattoos belong to gangs or are just bad people in general. However, tattoos have no factual association with crimes or unhealthy behaviors. Another common example of a misconception is that people with glasses are smart. Millennials today maybe beginning or finishing college, entering the workforce, or starting families. They are the biggest users of technology and social media since they were the first generation to be born in the technological era. Millennials spend a majority of their free time taking selfies, snap chatting, facebooking and tweeting their everyday adventures and food. They do not divert attention on others, but rather are focused on themselves and how to make their social media posts aesthetic. Millennials are extremely adventurous, eager to travel to every corner of this Earth. They enjoy concerts and the drinking culture often partaking in lethal activities such as drinking and driving and texting and driving. The general public is debating whenever Millennials, today’s age group, are caring well civic-minded people or entitled narcissists. The relationship between Millennials and narcissism is something that cannot be simply ignored, which is why various authors, for example Jean M. Twenge and Robin Marantz Henig, have published articles to back up their own personal views. Jean M. Twenge, a professor of psychology at San Diego State University, has written over 90 scientific publications and a book called Generation Me. In her article called Millennials: The Greatest Generation or the Most Narcissistic, she states how she has conducted different experiments that contradict what other authors have stated. By doing this she slowly built up and shaped her credibility; she is showing how she is far more superior for she is giving us facts she has uncovered herself. She makes her position clear and argues that other authors are wrong by coming up with a rebuttal for every claim that opposes her opinion, that Millennials are narcissistic. She creates a strong opinion with facts that supports it; however, she gives no statistics or percentages on the survey she conducted. She writes that out of ten million responses, some were ‘most likely’ or ‘least likely’ .Since she is comparing this generation the older generations, she should at least give us some statistics and comparisons. Without any numbers to prove her facts so we can compare with other authors, how can we be so sure most Millennials are narcissistic?     With technology easily accessible throughout their lives, it is easy to say the Millennial Generation had it easy, and they did. They take for granted the ease of access and the quick flow of information, a thing unlike any prior generation. Some may even say that they abuse their use of technology by using it at inappropriate or unnecessary times. Next, the generation’s expectations are far too high when looking for a job. David Bass takes this side of the argument. Although a Millennial himself, Bass describes a generation forcing themselves into massive debt, and then blaming outside factors. “... many reasons for my generation’s predicament… a direct result of our own choices.” (Bass, 31). With low employment rates, the Millennial Generation would rather go into debt than finding a job. Millennials will go to an undergraduate school for a four degree. Afterwards, unsure of what to do, they will then go to graduate school amassing an even larger debt. During this time period, the Millennial Generation will have also gained a large credit debit, setting them even further behind. These “self inflicted wounds” force Millennials to move in with the parents as they can’t afford, or can’t function, on their own.
