Stereotypes And People's Expectations

Stereotypes and people’s expectations of us greatly affect the way we live, especially if those stereotypes are negative and those expectations are low. Sherman Alexie perfectly illustrates this in his article, “Superman and Me”. He demonstrates how the power of expectations have caused Native Americans to lose hope, and remain stuck in a helpless cycle that is passed down through the generations. I wholeheartedly agree with Alexie that people are dragged down by the expectations of others. If people expect you to fail, you are more likely to develop a mentality that is negative and constantly view yourself as a failure. Thoughts are powerful.
