Stereotypes In My Recipe's Unique And No One Label

“When you label somebody and put them in a box, then you put the lid on the box, and you just never look inside again. I think it's much more interesting for human beings to look at each other's stories and see each other. Really see each other and then see themselves through other people's stories. That's where you start to break down stereotypes” (Stephanie Beatriz). It is important that you know what stereotypes are because you may not know when you are actually stereotyping someone. It impacts us because we automatically think about the bad in people without actually getting to know the people for who they truly are. A stereotype is how you view someone without truly knowing the person that you are judging. Stereotypes can be defined as judgements that people make against others before they truly understand them, and stereotypes impact our society in many ways. For example, in the poem, “Labels”, this poem relates to stereotypes because the author is saying that we shouldn’t label people. The poet writes that “My recipe’s unique and no one label fits.” (Holbrook). It helps support my definition of stereotypes because when you label someone you basically judge them based on their ethnicity. Because when you judge someone based on their ethnicity you are stereotyping them because of their skin color and their race. In addition, in the story, “Desiree’s Baby”, this story relates to stereotypes because you shouldn’t judge people by their skin color. “That the child is not white; it means that you are not white.” (Chopin). It impacts society with the way that we see each other. Because when you have a different skin color then that may make you think of that person in another way.
