“Wha a gu on?” “Wat’s up?” “Que pasa?” “Hoe gaat het?” Wat’s popping?” “Sak pase?” “How are you?” These phrases all have something in common, that is they are all greetings in different dialects or what is termed “slang.” They all ask the same thing but if you don’t speak the corresponding language or “slang” the average person would not know what is being said or how to respond. In essence if you don’t understand the relevance or parlance you are outside, apart or isolated from those who do. This aspect of cultural stereotyping is the separation of them and us; that is thinking that our norms and practices are distinctly different or superior to those of other groups. A prejudice is a preconceived judgment or irrational suspicion based on race, color or even religion that is made without finding out any facts or without justification. Comparing your neighbor’s son to his father who you have seen being violent or rude is stereotyping; saying a blonde female is not intelligent is prejudiced, her color might be bottled or she could be a doctor, the same goes for saying all Italians are mafia. Stereotyping is so prevalent in our daily lives that it has lead to many different problems; males are imprisoned based on their height, color, build or demeanor. Persons of certain ethnic groups are shunned or ridiculed because members of their society have committed atrocious acts and everyone is then “tarred and feathered” with the same brush. It has created troubles for people who want to “fit in” or be considered cool and try to use slang words from other groups to try to do so; take for example John Mayer, using the “N” word. The use of that word in the black community and now subsequently in other groups has lead to many problems that are caused by people crossing over the invisible boundaries of that “in group.” Numerous altercations have been started because of the misguided use of that word and the negative connotations attached to
