Still Alice
This movie is about a married couple with three adult children. The wife is lead character whom begins to suffer from early onset Alzheimer’s disease at the age of fifty. The husband looks older and name was John, and their adult children names were Lydia, Anna, and Tom. All the family were highly educated but Lydia whom did not want to go to college but had a dream to act and own her own theater.
The movie begins with the family having a birthday dinner outing for the mom at a restaurant. The next day the mother goes to work at a university and begins her lecture as she normally does. As Alice was lecturing she forgot what she was saying, this startled her. Then, she later gathered her thoughts and continued with the lecture. As time goes by, Alice continued to notice separate times when she forgot things or got lost so she scheduled her a doctor’s appointment. Carol lost her husband twenty years ago and never remarried. Carol was a school teacher and used to be in a band. After the loss of her husband, she retired and lived off her husband insurance. She has one adult daughter name Katherine that don’t visit that often. She does have three other older lady friends that she goes over to their retirement living center to play cards with and hang out. They are share the loss of their husbands and they goes out to a safe place where men and woman go to meet and socialize with other men like on a date for five minutes. Carol experienced the intuitive grief process where it took her a long time to express the death of her husband to others that been through similar losses to help their healing process (Doughty, 2009, p.463). Her friends talk to her about dating again since Carol husband had been dead for over twenty years now. This was a long time to be alone, not socialize too much, grieve and be depressed after the loss of a husband that was a lawyer. Carol felt like she had already been married so she did not want to remarry. After Carol first dog of many years died she was lonely again. She begins to go out again and try something new and she met a retired man name Bill. Bill asked Carol out on a date and she enjoyed his company. Carol really liked Bill and he was the only one that she left her house and hung out with all day.
