Stereotypes Of Golf
Stereotypes are powerful things. They lurk not in the shadows, but often with glaring clarity. These forgone conclusions on different matters often shape our view of the world, and sometimes, without even knowing it, we look at some things with a colorless view solely because of what we’ve heard or think we know. I, in fact, had one of these colorless attitudes towards the great game of golf, or more accurately the people who played it. I, coming from a family with little income, always thought of golfers as self-obsessed, elitists, that looked down upon us "common folk". They were rich, pretentious, and arrogant, while I actually cared about people other than myself. I never once sat down and thought that maybe these people weren't just dressing …show more content…
Picturing myself walking around a golf course carrying a heavy golf bag, and sweating profusely was not my idea of a good time. This is going to be almost as fun as going to the dentist, I thought as we drove down country club lane. Stepping out of the car I full heartedly expected an array of dirty looks and shaking heads, but to quite the contrary the opposing team all smiled a shook my hand. Each of them along with the coach introduced themselves and wished me luck on my first round. That was weird, I thought as I walked with Casey over to the putting green. Then, another strange thing happened, my playing partner Chase along with his coach came over to talk to me before my round. They both told me that since this was my first round that if I had any concerns or questions that I was to ask them for help as often as I …show more content…
Walking over to the first tee, I received at least five ''good lucks'' and "do wells" on the way. Of course, with it being my first ever tee shot I missed the ball. I turned around expecting the crowd to be laughing, but actually they simply said it is okay and that everyone makes mistakes. After another miss and a topped ball my round was underway. As my round went on I continued to make mistakes, and every time I did the parents and coaches that walked with us always offered a few words of encouragement. Still, I was looking for the qualities I had always heard and assumed that golfers had, but not once did I find them. When we all had finished I shot the worst score of anyone at the match, but that did not stop multiple people from approaching me to tell me to keep practicing and that I would only get better from here. Those words stuck with me, I would only get better from

Then it was finally my turn and as I stepped up the wind died down, now was my time and I teed the ball up quickly. I stood back and looked down the fairway for the different variables on the hole. There was out-of-bounds was far right and there was woods on the left but the hole had a fairly wide fairway. I begin to think of how I plan to hit the ball and I plan on putting a slight draw on the ball to give it topspin so it will roll more. I feel good about my swing and when I felt ready so I stepped up to the ball and pictured my ball in the fairway. Then I brought the club…

Behind me I could hear giggles from some of my teammates as they watched a movie in the van. Golf has been a passion of mine since my brother Jayden and I were little. I was in eighth grade at the time of this event. The previous year I went into sections as a seventh grader, expecting nothing of myself, and I ended up going to state. My teammate Amy also made it to state for her first year, and we had an amazing…

After reading Night Hoops, I have developed a new mindset on how I should pursue my goals no matter what impediments obstruct my ability to reach them. Nick, the protagonist, always dreamt of earning his spot on his high school’s varsity basketball team, but his road to the team was filled with family troubles; being overshadowed by his older brother, Scott; and run-ins with Trent, the local bully. However, Nick persevered through it all and accomplished his goal of making the varsity basketball team. Over the past few years, I have been extremely dedicated to becoming the best golfer I can be. However recently, I have lost my enthusiasm for the game. Because of this, I feel like I can relate to Nick and although he is a fictional character, use him as inspiration to rededicate myself to the game of golf.…

Open, that I’ve never played before? Pure luck some would say! I say mental preparation and visual training. I knew that my tee time was a few weeks away and instead of joyfully waiting for that day to come, I decided to play the Torrey Pines course on EA Sports Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2014 video game every day until then. I probably played that hole over twenty times in that timeframe. You see, with the dramatic increase in technology, video games have morphed into digital replicas of real-world environments, creating modern virtual reality simulators. With features only previously dreamt about in golf folklore, like real-time course weather and lighting or topographical mapping of the putting green surface. I arrived on the day of my tee time knowing every detail about that course, every hole, every green. If playing the video game for only two weeks gave me that much of a competitive and mental advantage, imagine the possibilities for a professional athlete. This paper will show that even though nothing compensates for real-world experience, professional athletes should incorporate video games or virtual reality simulators into their training programs to gain a competitive…

My response to the poem Sarah Cleghorn’s “the golf links lie so near the mill” is that even thou people can play they can’t always do so. Even if it is so close that they can feel it. In most of our lives there are things we want to do but can’t due to restrictions. Either our job takes up our lives or we don’t have jobs. Sure it is always there that we could say today I’m going to play versus work but what would the consequences be. That the rich…

Hole eight was my destination; that’s where I was to meet my team. After introductions, the horn blared and the tournament began. After three tremendous shots down the fairway, the last boy in our group, Thomas, proceeded towards the tee box. That’s when I noticed something was wrong with the way he walked. What is wrong with him? How is he going to tee off if he can’t even walk right? This was going to take forever! He finally swung and the ball flew about fifty yards in front of him. I thought to myself, “My grandma could shoot farther than that and she’s never even played golf.” This was just the start of how our day went. At every hole, the two boys and I came in close to par; while, Thomas always scored ten to fifteen strokes over par. I noticed, though, his unbridled excitement and smile never faded. Every time his ball hit the hole, his enthusiasm was uncontainable. There were high fives for everyone! Somewhere along the course, I knew that my mindset had changed. Thomas helped me realizing that there was so much more to playing the game then to just win. I aspired to always do my best and enjoy the thrill of just playing the game.…

About two years ago, I made the decision that I wanted to play golf. Most people consider it one of the easiest sports to play. I can see why. I don’t have to run or really do anything athletic however, the hardest thing about golf is overcoming the mental aspect. The mental aspect of playing golf has made a noticeable impact not only in my game, but in my everyday life as well. This was not something that happened overnight. I still struggle with it today. I used to be extremely negative and hard on myself to the point that I had a difficult time letting myself just play. I was so criticizing toward myself that I didn't even want to continue to play. I needed to learn to let some things go, whether it be a bad shot or a bad hole. I had to…

By the fifth hole, anger continued to steadily flow throughout my body, not giving a hoot about my round at this point, only caring about the event htat had previously took place. My father quietly pulled me aside, and pronounced, "How do you think your playing right now?" "Who care's, the tournaments over." "That's just not true, Anthony." "I brought you out here today so you could have fun and experience your first competition, I don't care if you end up with one-thousand strokes. All I care about is if you have fun and leave all of your effort on the golf course." "I see." "Okay, now come on, let's play some golf and have fun." After making my first par on hole six. I continued to stay level headed even if I did end up making a triple bogey on seven."…

My shoulders blazed from the beating sun and my palms were sweaty. I walked confidently toward the green as the other athletes were waiting on me. I was playing toward what looked like an amateur's ideal score, a 45. It was the first home golf match of the year, and I could not afford to score any higher than my goal. I had to make sure my mind didn’t mess up more shots than my body.…
