In his work, “Situating Sexualities”, Fran Martin explains that political and economic power have, unquestionably, a huge impact on cultural understanding of gender and sexuality. When discussing
media representation of various groups, especially those we consider marginalized, stereotypes are often a primary concern. But sometimes, breaking a stereotype doesn’t go quite far enough, and the issue can be a little more complicated than merely determining whether or not a character is represented in a positive or negative way. Therefore, the representation of sexual minorities in popular culture cannot be studied exclusive from their socio-political conditions.
The purpose of this term paper is to explore the above said elements, using the movies ‘Fire’ (Mira Nair, 1996) and ‘Blue is the warmest colour’ (Abdellatif Keechiche, 2013) as the critical text.
