The answer lies in prejudice. The negative attitude that the American soldiers had towards the Iraqi people is what led to them mistreating the Iraqi prisoners. This was majorly influenced by the fact that an Iraqi terrorist group had recently attacked America in 2001, in the 9/11 attacks by a terrorist group, led by Saddam Hussein. The negative stereotype around the Iraqi people had led the American soldiers to believe that everybody in Iraq was a terrorist. Hence, they tortured the prisoners with the belief that they were doing the right thing. Such kind of instances only demonstrates how violent and dangerous prejudice can be. Bias has also led to other inhuman acts such as acts of racism and ethnicity.
