transition: Now that we understand all of the physical effects of anabolic steroids, we must look into the mental effects of anabolic steroids. After noting all the physical effects that anabolic steroids have on the human body, one must not forget the many mental effects that anabolic steroids have on the human body. Studies have indicated that when used in high amounts, anabolic steroids cause an increase in irritability, aggression, and depression. A recent study suggested that the hormonal effects of steroid usage resulted in aggressive behavior. Likewise, steroid use has been proven to be an addictive trait. Steroids users spend a lot of time and money to obtain the often illegal drugs, which is a good indication that they are addicted. When users stop taking steroids, they often see withdrawal symptoms, such as mood swings, restlessness, insomnia, and a lack of appetite, along with a desire to do more steroids. Of all the withdrawal symptoms, the most dangerous is depression. Depression can become overwhelming and lead to suicide.

Moller also says, “Just as the vast majority of people try marijuana at some point in their lives, the vast majority of baseball players have used steroids” (Moller 549).I’m sure there are plenty of people who have tried marijuana, including baseball players; however, if it’s true that the vast majority of baseball players have used steroids, then we can assume that steroid use is just part of being a baseball player. I hope that that isn’t true, because then baseball isn’t really a sport about skill, rather than who can get their hands on the better…

Although it is true that steroids cannot improve a hitter’s hand-eye coordination, balance, or reflex, steroids can affect how hard a hitter hits a baseball. The harder one can hit a baseball the better the chance a hitter has of a getting a base hit. More hits lead to more runs scored, home runs hit, runs batted in by a single player. High statistics lead to Major League Baseball records that have stood for many years to be broken. A player will earn a high salary because of his accomplishments. He will have more of a fan base. This not only affects his pocket book, but the pocket book of the owner of the player’s baseball team because of the increased attendance the player generates. Higher…

Why else would baseball players take steroids if there was no benefit. The pluses of steroids usually come in the form of strength increase. This of course helps the player hit more homeruns and throw the ball farther. “Someone who is on steroids will experience increased performance in all athletic pursuits and will appear more physically imposing” (“Lemouse”). Every day people think that steroids just give the athlete more strength but in actuality they do more than just that. Like mentioned in the previous paragraph steroids do more to help the athlete like gain endurance to do the workout and they also help with tissue repair and recovery (Lemouse). Players Barry Bonds, Mark McGuire, and Roger Clemens used steroids more for the healing factor rather than the physical gains. Mainly athletes will use steroids to become stronger and bigger to become better players though. The gains that an athlete gets from steroids are usually seen around 6 to 12 weeks, yet they can still see changes around the 3 week mark (Linnaeus). Another possible benefit to steroids is that for the athletes that use them steroids can be easy to obtain. There have been stories of baseball players going to foreign countries to play in the offseason. They were not on the hunt for steroids but they came across them because those are what the foreigners used on a daily basis. For the athletes who do take steroids this can be a positive to them. Athletes are…

There has been a lot of controversy regarding steroids in baseball. Questions have been asked: does it enhance the player’s ability? Do baseball records today reflect the use of steroids? The most common use of steroids is to increase muscle development and growth, increase stamina and endurance and the reduction of body fat. Steroids are used by players to gain a competitive edge against other players, giving the player the ability to hit the ball farther and to throw the ball harder. In the 90’s Ken Caminitti went on record stating that half of the Major league players are using steroids. Statistics shown Total home runs surpassed the 5,000 mark in the 90’s compared to 4,000 in the 80’s. Steroids in the 1990’s were evident with the home run statistics and multiple players going on record admitting the use of steroids. In 2005 Baseball owners and players came up with stiffer and more stringent penalties. These new penalties are much harsher than the previous ones. This was a quick solution to take a more serious approach to monitor and penalize the use of steroids in the major leagues. For the first offense of steroids a player will receive a…

At the time of this study (1990) many studies done previously had focused just on the medical side-effects of anabolic steroids; however, the researchers were more curious about the psychological and behavioral side-effects. So to learn more about the psychological effects they chose six overall candidates (three steroid users, three non-steroid users, all of which were bodybuilders), and at four points during their six week training session administered the Buss-Durke Hostility Inventory questionnaire. While the group sizes were very small, the data does show that after the questionnaires those that used the steroids scored considerably higher in aggression and hostility than those who were off the drug.…

Newspapers, Magazines, Sports works, and all types of mainstream media have been covering stories and rumors of players using performance enhancing substances. There are three major types of steroids that are strictly banned from MLB. These include Performance Enhancing Drug (PEDs), Synthetic Testosterone, and Human Growth Hormones (HGH). I will discuss the difference between the two in this section. Performance Enhancing Drugs were banned from use in the MLB in 1991, but was not officially tested for until 2003. While Human Growth Hormones were not banned from use until 2005, Synthetic Testosterone was banned from the MLB in early 2010’s. First of all, PEDs are the most frequently used drug in the MLB among players. According to www.BleacherReport.com, pitchers, mostly relief pitchers, typically use the drug. Simply, because they, the pitchers, have to pitch day after day, sometimes the drug isn’t used to get their pitching velocity up; instead it’s, the PED, is used to give the pitcher the security to pitch again. This is extremely difficult for opposing batters, because in baseball, the game is all about numbers. You have less than a second to determine whether or not to swing at the pitch, with PEDs, it makes it that much harder. HGH can be explained very simply, it do effects the brain function, causing increased hand-eye coordination, and eye sight, causing better…

Since steroids have been introduced and used in sports, sports have never been the same. Steroids have improved a bodybuilder’s physique, a baseball player’s physical ability, and an Olympians overall endurance and performance. Without steroids, Arnold Schwarzenegger would have never won the Mr. Olympia Competition seven times, and Lou Ferrigno would have never been the Incredible Hulk. In baseball, Mark McGuire would have never shattered Roger Maris 1961 single-season home run record by hitting 9 more. With all that being said, steroids have enhanced player’s ability to shatter long-standing records and raise player salaries to astronomical cost.
