Performance enhancing drugs are very bad. Steroids are one of many performance enhancing drugs that are not natural for the human body. Steroids are an enhancement drug, that will increase your muscles, body size, testosterone, and physical and mental body. Although many people think steroids don't effect your body at all negatively, they can severely injure your body. Taking steroids “can cause enlargement of the heart, which can lead to heart failure; high blood pressure; hardening of the arteries which leads to coronary heart disease; elevated cholesterol; heart attack; stroke; anaphylactic and septic shock” (Andrade). This could lead to many trips to the hospital, and could permanently stop you from working out as a whole. Another huge

Why else would baseball players take steroids if there was no benefit. The pluses of steroids usually come in the form of strength increase. This of course helps the player hit more homeruns and throw the ball farther. “Someone who is on steroids will experience increased performance in all athletic pursuits and will appear more physically imposing” (“Lemouse”). Every day people think that steroids just give the athlete more strength but in actuality they do more than just that. Like mentioned in the previous paragraph steroids do more to help the athlete like gain endurance to do the workout and they also help with tissue repair and recovery (Lemouse). Players Barry Bonds, Mark McGuire, and Roger Clemens used steroids more for the healing factor rather than the physical gains. Mainly athletes will use steroids to become stronger and bigger to become better players though. The gains that an athlete gets from steroids are usually seen around 6 to 12 weeks, yet they can still see changes around the 3 week mark (Linnaeus). Another possible benefit to steroids is that for the athletes that use them steroids can be easy to obtain. There have been stories of baseball players going to foreign countries to play in the offseason. They were not on the hunt for steroids but they came across them because those are what the foreigners used on a daily basis. For the athletes who do take steroids this can be a positive to them. Athletes are…

Steroids come in a variety of way to be consumed: injected, swallowed, and snorted. These steroids build muscle to help one perform. Main steroids are HGH (Human Growth Hormone), anabolic steroids. All makes will make one stronger, all can end ones career. “Anabolic- androgenic steroids are synthetic derivatives of the male hormone testosterone” (Wadler). That’s just a nice way of saying anabolic-androgenic steroids make one stronger using fake hormones. Anabolic steroids are the most effective and have the worst long term affects. Anabolic steroids are so effective that they are prescribed by doctors to treat “malnutrition, growth disorders, and testosterone deficiency”(Wadler) Although most of these short term affects sound good, the long term seem to throw a juicy curve-ball back at you. Anne Marie Brooks, a writer for a weekly health magazine, states: “Muscles grow so rapidly that tendon or ligament damage results during physical activity. Instead of better performance, the user may face weeks or months on crutches, in a brace, in pain. “Ouch! That sounds like the negatives over rule the positives (of steroids) and anabolic steroids don’t sound so good after all. HGH which is a safer alternative of steroids is also used by a lot of athletes. “Human Growth Hormone is produced by the…

Drugs can do a lot of bad things for an athletes body. Meyer, Stephen wrote,¨ Epo can increase the number of red blood cells to such a degree that the blood becomes too thick to flow properly, potentially leading to heart attacks and strokes.¨(Meyer). Taking drugs like these can lead to death, a win is not worth more than an athlete's life. Another bad thing steroids can do is lead to Cardiovascular problems. Meyer, Stephen said in his article,¨Some studies have associates steroid use with serious cardiovascular problems, including cardiomyopathies (inflammation of the heart muscle), irregular heart rhythm, development of embolisms( blockage of an artery by a clot or particle that is carried in the bloodstream), and the heart failure.¨(Meyer). This is another health issue that can lead to death which is not worth it. People who take or sell steroids should understand that a life is at risk. People have to understand that what may seem to be a harmless enhancer can actually lead to someone's…

The harms steroids can cause on the athlete are not the only concern when taking them. Steroids give athletes that boost in their performance which puts them above their competitors. This gives for an unfair advantage among the players. Since steroids work so well and create an unfair advantage, it breaks the social contract athletes agree to: “We are going to have a fair contest” (“ProCon.org”). Sports are about competition on equal footing, with respect for the opponent, and with respect for the rules of the game (“Why Steroids Have No Place in Sports”). Even if there were a safe substance for enhancing performance, if it wasn’t equally available to everyone it would still be considered cheating.…
