Chafets response is that even though steroids and anabolic are used by baseball players, the game have changed during the years. But these factors does not alter the game in general and steroids does alter the game. Many athletes recur to drugs to increase their chances to win and it exists more athletes that use this drugs than then society can ever imagine, so statistics change because the game is no longer “real” or honest. Regardless baseball is loved by US citizens.…
In this controversial book, Jose Canseco exposes many other players who allegedly used steroids, but most of them deny ever doing so. Jose Canseco’s writings discover a high level of hypocrisy at all levels within the sport, from the players, to owners, league officials and even fans. Jose Canseco’s information proves to be very damaging to the players, immediately after he personally named them as users, they were labeled as cheaters. Major League Baseball also suffered as an organization as well for having consciously looked away for many years and never addressing the issue because the inflated batting averages, stolen bases and especially the Home Runs were bringing many more fans and consequently more revenue.…
Cincinnati Reds outfielder Jay Gatsby was suspended 162 games without pay for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance, Major League Baseball announced on Friday.…
Known as America’s pastime, baseball is a game in which generations of children of all ages grow up playing in parks, streets, and alleyways throughout America. These same children grew up idolizing names such as Cy Young, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Jackie Robinson, and Hank Aaron. These men, as thousands of men before and after them, played in a league simply named Major League Baseball. Major League Baseball is rich in history with statistics and records dating back to 1873. Baseballchronology.com (n. d.) provides this fact. However, as technology has advanced, so have the men who play this game. In the last 15 years athletes have become bigger, faster, and stronger making a game that is so difficult to play, look relatively easy. As a result records that have stood for many years are able to be shattered. Attendance has increased to record levels. Team owners and players are making record amounts of money. Unfortunately, along with these record accomplishments Major League Baseball is enjoying, the use of illegal drugs known as steroids are running rampant among the league’s players. Therefore, although players have become bigger, faster, and stronger, rampant steroid use among players of the last 15 years has changed the face of Major League Baseball negatively.…
Barry Bonds is regarded as one of the greatest baseball players in the history of the game. However, after a court trial against his trainer, it was proven that Barry Bonds had used steroids during training throughout his baseball career. Now his record of 73 home runs in a season has a big asterisk next to it (Bunning). Yet, Barry Bonds and many other athletes are still inducted into their sports’ Hall of Fame even though they used steroids. Athletes who used steroids should not be inducted into the Hall of Fame because it is illegal to use steroids and those who use steroids are cheaters.…
The purpose of this essay is to discuss if Alex Rodriguez should be banned from baseball. I will present some arguments about the use of anabolic steroids in sports, and respond to these arguments by showing that the reason for banning steroids is not always as clear as it seems.…
Baseball is one of the oldest professional sports in the United States that is still heavily played and viewed by spectators. NBC sports conducted a survey to find out the number of people who watch baseball yearly. They found baseball is in second place behind football with 1.01 billion people watching MLB games annually. Baseball has always been my number one love in the sports world. In my lifetime, there have been many changes to the game. Today, one of the most drastic changes that’s occurring in baseball culture is the use of performance-enhancing drugs. How have these performance-enhancing drugs affected the game of baseball? Steroids, human growth hormones, and amphetamines have a large impact…
Steroids have apparently become extremely predominant throughout the years in Major League Baseball. Players have taken advantage of this illegal substance in the United States to increase their skills, speed, power, and abilities to overpass challenging competitors. This competition arises from teammates or even future prospects that may threaten to take their position. It is said that a large percentage of these professionals have been taking steroids to improve their performance and therefore gaining new records. Steroids and other stimulants have damaged athlete’s physical appearance, has increased injuries and created an uneven competition between professionals.…
Major League Baseball players who have used or been accused of using steroids should be considered for Hall of Fame induction. It is often speculated that players who use steroids are more likely to hit more home runs per season. Arthur De Vany proves in his article “Steroids And Home Runs.” from Economic Inquiry, that in the past 40 years, there hasn’t been a significant increase in the number of home runs hit by major league players (490). People argue that because more home runs are being hit per season, and that records are falling with short tenure, that there is a direct correlation to steroid use with out considering other variables. The baseball season has been extended quite a few times. In 1919, Babe Ruth broke a 36 year old record of 27 home runs with 29. This seems to be a remarkable feat, until one considers that Ned Williamson’s (The previous record holder) record came in a season of 112 games, where as…
50 hits, 20 runs, no errors, and massive absence of integrity: that describes now-a-day baseball. Today’s version of baseball and other sports are tainted by the use of steroids and other muscle gaining agents. In 2001 Barry Bonds hit 73 home runs: a single season record. A mere 5 years later Barry Bonds tested positive for the use of performance enhancing drugs also known as steroids. That is what Americans kids are looking up to and taking after. When a High School athlete sees a professional athlete having success due to steroids, their mind is manipulated into using steroids. The use of steroids is detrimental to everyone.…
Thesis: Steroids in Major League Baseball has affected the game in both positive and negative ways. It brought baseball back to life in the 90’s; it has tarnished records, and has affected the game even today.…
Big muscles and performance enhancing drugs have changed the game of baseball forever. Performance enhancing substances, stimulants, and drugs of abuse are banned by Major League Baseball. According to the Los Angeles Times, there are a total of 58 substances, 30 stimulants, and 7 drugs of abuse that Major League Baseball has banned players from using. Performance enhancing drug usage was speculated as a problem, but wasn’t showcased on a national level until ten players were called to testify in front of a grand jury that was investigating Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative (BALCO) of running a high volume steroid distribution ring. Jose Canseco releases his autobiography, titled “Juiced,” and tells that he actually injected Mark McGwire with steroids and also introduced them to other players. The House Government Reform Committee conducted a hearing scolding Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig for having lenient penalties for positive steroid tests. Lance Williams and Mark Fainaru-Wada release a book titled “Game of Shadows” that cites legitimate BALCO transcripts and court documents. After MLB Commissioner Bud Selig read the book “Game of Shadows,” former Senator George Mitchell was appointed by Selig to conduct an investigation into the history of drug use by players in MLB and the effectiveness of the MLB Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program (Mitchell 2).…
Have you ever watched a baseball game and wondered just how some players are “too good” at the game? I may just have an answer for that. Ever since the early 1990’s, Major League Baseball (MLB) has had a huge problem among players cheating to alter their stats, otherwise known as, steroids. Steroids is not just a problem in the MLB, it is used in many of the other major sports, but in baseball its most commonly used. In this essay I will discuss what steroids are (as well as distinguish the difference between HGH, Synthetic Testosterone, and PEDs), I then will give my input into whether or not players who have been caught “doping” should be elected into the Hall of Fame, and I will discuss the Steroid scandals in recent history.…
The United State is a country that thrives on competition. We idolize our sports stars and practically make major athletic events holidays. Children grow up with their favorite athletes plastered to the wall of their bedrooms and dream that one day they will be the next Barry Bonds, Shaqullie O 'Neal, or Tom Brady. Professional athletes train year-round to be in ideal psychical shape in order to perform their best. But what happens when their best just isn 't good enough? We expect our sports stars to be perfect, upstanding citizens and role models but this isn 't always the case. The recent exposure of athletes using steroids has exploded into a phenomenon involving athletes all around the world. It has cheapened sports and cast doubt on the integrity of our athletes. Steroid use is not exclusive to professional sports. More and more college and high school athletes are beginning to use steroids for many of the same reasons that the pros do; to enhance performance, get an edge on the competition, and improve personal appearance.…
Alex Rodriguez, the highest paid player in the history of baseball, has finally come clean about his use of steroids in the last decade as part of an immunity deal with the Drug Enforcement Association. Although the All-Star third baseman had admitted to steroids use in the past, he had steadfastly denied using banned substances since he joined the New York Yankees in 2004. “All my years in New York have been clean,” he told ESPN in 2009. (Howard). With this in mind, many people enjoy watching sports to see the natural and physical abilities of these athletes. But nowadays you can never be too sure about whether not the players are using steroids or not, which is considered cheating if they are caught and even though steroids help build muscle,…
