Tim O’Brien, author of The Things They Carried, applies multiple techniques in his memoir in order to produce the theme of horror in war. He utilizes word connotation, literary/rhetorical techniques, sentence structure, and overall structure in the memoir. In an excerpt on page 199, O’Brien employs the combination of anaphora, metaphor, and negative word connotation to illustrate the horror of the Vietnam War.…
The argument being presented in the given piece is the FBI asking permission from Apple to have the ability to access people’s private messages in their apple products. This argument came into conversation after the terrorist attack in San Bernardino, California. The author’s claim towards the argument is that the FBI should not be able to have the ability to tap into people’s individual cell phones. Although the FBI’s idea of decoding Apple’s encryption code in order to gain access to tapping into all iPhones under service, it seems that the cons outweigh the pros of this certain situation. However, there has to be a completely different way the FBI can develop a better way to combat terrorism without interfering with all of Apple’s customers.…
Fifty-inch plasma TV, Xbox 360 game console, IPhone, the latest shoes, and the beer that your friends drink come in packaging, the thing that wraps up our food, our toys, and keeps our things looking good. Some packaging is used to lengthen the life of the food eaten, other forms are used to protect the product from the outside environment and the risk of contamination. Packaging is also used to inform the consumer about the product like giving instructions on how to use the product or the expiration date. The various types of packaging are also efficient…
Throughout the tragic novel Into the Wild, author Jon Krakauer provides an in depth analysis of the life and lonely death of Christopher McCandless. McCandless was a young man straight out of college, looking to find himself while hitchhiking alone in the bush of Alaska. Unfortunately for Chris his well anticipated venture turned fatal after a hundred some days alone in the wilderness. Jon Krakauer uses rhetorical methods for the duration of the book, which allows him to speak of Chris’s life with a sense of certainty. The reader thus trusts Krakauer’s narrative and somewhat understands why a man like Chris could head into unknown territory without a second thought. The author shows his qualification for writing about Chris by making comparisons with his own life and interviewing those close to Chris…
The ideas and ideals the Steve Jobs brings to the table are absolutely astonishing. I mean, just hearing what he had to say literally made me feel as if there were nothing in the world I couldn’t do. I completely agree with what he says. “Remembering that I’ll be dead soon was is the most important tool I have ever encountered.”(Jobs, 2005). Knowing the fact that we all have an hourglass above our heads is extremely important when trying to become something in a short period of time. It means you better get off your behind and do something otherwise you will get that opportunity ever again. Those that only come once in a lifetime. We all have done this at some point in our lives. That is procrastinate when you are asked to do something. What he says really clicks with me and may for hundreds of thousands of people.…
In the blurred definition of a successful life, happiness and pleasure are characteristics that have been lucid and parallel in the many contrasting ideas. Amongst successful icons in today’s society, Steve Jobs has been admired by many people as a role model and a representation of a successful journey. In Steve Jobs's commencement address to the Stanford University alumni, he elaborates on the idea that it is essential to follow one’s heart, in order to find what genuinely makes one happy. He also emphasizes the necessity to find a profession in which one is talented and willingly able to enjoy, in a way that portrays happiness in what one does as success. Although some may argue that his ideas are a bit superficial and naive,…
For my tenth journal I’m writing about Donald Trump. One of his logos is he doesn’t want the baby to be aborted last week before his/her birth. Also his logos is that he wants strong borders, no amnesty and to get rid of the bad people. As well as,his logos regosinate Nafta or cancel Nafta and create a new trade deal. His ethos is questionable when nine women said that they have been touched by Donald. But, he says he doesn’t even know them and that Hillary sent these women to make him look bad. But nine women isn’t a small number to be considered lying. It’s nine women, not one or two to call them liars. It’s more than enough to believe them.…
Facebook isn’t just a place to see pictures of friends and family’s latest vacation, or to see what your sister-in-law cooked for dinner that night. It’s a place where news, messages, ideas, and funny cat videos can spread at the click of a button. Given that, on average, over 628 million people log on to facebook each day, it is a great website for advertisement. With these statistics, anyone trying to relay some type of message would be “stupid” to not use Facebook as a resource. With this in mind, the Facebook page of GOP front runner Donald Trump takes advantage of the use of Facebook to express his personal values, gain media exposure, and to acquire voter support for his presidential campaign through a use of image and text post strategies…
Well-known Sci-fi writer, Ray Bradbury, in his novel, Fahrenheit 451, illustrates that relationships reflect who individuals are and who they want to be. Bradbury’s purpose is to promote the idea that a person should have the courage to listen to their own beliefs and thoughts of happiness rather than to blend in with society. He adopts a disoriented and poetic tone in order to appeal to similar feelings and experiences on a non-realistic scale in his young adult readers.…
The speech was an eye-opener for those people who did not get satisfaction for the work they did. A recent research that was conducted by Gallup showed that more than 70% of Americans dislike their careers (Fields 55). As a result, there is a sharp drop in the delivery of services because the love for the job has dissipated. In his speech, Steve Jobs talked about following one’s heart in choosing a career. Pursuing one’s passion brings satisfaction to an individual such that they may not wish to get anywhere else. Jobs used his experiences to make the audience understand his point. Jobs dropped out of college because he was not getting the satisfaction he was craving for. He felt that he was wasting his parent’s money learning the things he did not like. Jobs followed his dream and years later, he became one of the most successful people in the world. Although there are valid contrasting views to Steve Jobs’ idea of choosing a career, such as Jeff Haden’s views in Do What You Love? Screw That, Jobs’ notions are the most compelling (Fields 81). The example of the success achieved by Jobs is just one of those moments that people follow their dream and go on to achieve greatness. Many benefits will be accrued by an individual who chooses to follow his/her passion in a career…
According to the 100A assignment sheet for the rhetorical analysis, a rhetorical analysis (R.A.) is a type of writing which analyzes a professional document, text, etc. of a writer. It’s really been tiring and lonely during the few days ever since I got here.…
In "You've got to find what you love," Steve Jobs in his Commencement speech to Stanford students teaches them through life stories the life lessons he has learned, sometimes the hard way. Jobs through his speech appealed to pathos and used this emotional speech to convince college students to do what you love and follow your passion. Jobs teaches these lessons by telling three stories from his life. The first story tells about his time in college when he dropped out and began to drop in on classes that interested him and how these courses and following his “curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on” (Jobs). His second story focuses on the time in his life when he was publicly fired from Apple, and after a short time away…

Steve Jobs, an American businessman, was one of the most successful individuals of all the time. Jobs co-founded Apple in 1976 and he was best known as the chief executive officer (CEO) of Apple Inc. Steve Jobs dropped out of college and he became successful despite not having and education. In Steve Jobs’ Commencement Address to Stanford University, he reveals that it is important to find what you love to do and to spend your life enjoying every moment you live. Although is it profound to pursue what you love, taking the risk of dropping out of college to do what you love does not work for most people. I support Jobs’ argument that we should do what we love, however, not many people have the same skills and resources that Jobs did to achieve…
