Steven Allaback's Short Story 'Plovers'
In the short story “Plovers”, we see Steven Allaback using narrative gaps to make us ponder on the characters’ history. We don’t know the couple’s names or how they met, but the author does reveal a few important details such as where the characters were raised, how long they’ve been together, and their favorite hobby, which is bird watching. Still, the author leaves us wondering about their past as there is hardly any information about their close relatives especially since the story takes place during Christmas, which is the time many people visit close relatives. The Beak of the Finch by Jonathan Weiner explores evolution through the most famous examples in history—the finches of the Galápagos Islands. Charles Darwin’s theory of natural selection and the process of evolution are applied directly to what scientists refer to as Darwin’s Finches. Weiner follows scientists Peter and Rosemary Grant as they study the finches in real time on the Galápagos. Years of previous work, study and data is collected and analyzed. Different species of animals are observed and explained throughout history. The Grants have one goal, and that is to find the origin of the species, how organisms first began. They find that it really is about the “survival of the fittest” and who nature selects to thrive and produce generations far greater than the last.…

When The Fabulous Freebirds first came to the ring with rock and roll blasting, it was revolutionary. When Vince McMahon got Cindy Lauper and MTV to cross-promote their programming it was groundbreaking. For every hit moment like those in rock and wrestling, there are plenty of flops. The Simon Cowell produced "Slam Jam" can barely be considered music and still somehow managed to hit the UK charts. Looking back, "Rap is Crap" made the otherwise lovable Mr. Perfect Curt Hennig look like an out-of-touch, redneck tool. At WrestleMania XIX, Limp Bizkit got Roman Reigns level boos from the crowd who were generally sick of their repetitive, whiny nu metal. Even on a personal level wrestlers and rock musicians have clashed. Motley Crue drummer Tommy…

At first the purpose of the passage “Owls” by Mary Oliver is difficult to pinpoint. This is because Oliver begins with describing the penetrating fear of a “terrible” (33) great horned owl, and suddenly develops into a section discussing a desultory and trivial field of flowers. The mystifying comparison between the daunting fear of nature and its impeccable beauty is in fact Oliver’s purpose.…

In 1934, in February, when the dust was still so thick in the Minnesota air that my parents couldn’t always see from the house to the barn, their fifth child – a fourth daughter – was born. My father hunted rabbits daily, and my mother stewed them, fried them, canned them, and wished out loud that she could taste hamburger once more. In the fall the shotgun brought prairie chickens, ducks, pheasant, and grouse. My mother plucked each bird, carefully reserving the breast feathers for…

In the book titled, Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott, she describes different techniques in how she goes about writing. Lamott mentions how much she procrastinates before writing drafts because sometimes panic sets in and also how her mind wanders at times. For example, she states that “I think about someone I’m really annoyed with, or some financial problem that is driving me crazy, and decide that I must resolve this before I get down to today’s work” (17). Although I do not write all that often, if I have a task at hand that is due in a timely fashion, I find that I too will procrastinate before getting to that task. I actually have done so in this first assignment. Feeling uncertain on whether or not I am doing this correctly is a reason I believe…

The movie, Antwone Fisher is a wonderful and thought provoking film full of symbolism, pain, and hope. It is also a very “familiar story” considering other coming-of-age films, but it is presented with “great sympathy and intelligence” that the viewer will not soon forget. (Berardinelli) Antwone Fisher takes the audience through a journey of various subsystems of communities: prison, orphanage, foster care, homeless shelter, and the Navy. However a community encompasses more than a system. Community is ever changing, evolving, and interacting with the needs of the people developing into their own. Communities are influenced by environment, political climate, and economy. We watch Antwone Fisher dream of his perfect family, and the need he has to make a connection with his past. However, the journey he goes through with the help of his Psychiatrist, Dr. Davenport, and his girlfriend Cheryl, is trying, sometimes turbulent, and full of pit-falls. Antwone reaches his own epiphany when he learns who he is, meets his family, and is able to trust others while overcoming his fear of rejection and abandonment. Watching the events unfold through Antwone’s eyes, you find yourself asking what specific influences kept him from turning to violence and crime on the streets. Those answers can be found by carefully examining the progression of events, Antwone’s choices, positive influences, as well as looking at the meaning and symbolism behind the scenes.…

The image of Red Bull is open to interpretation. It is synonymous to a “bull in china shop” – it is not subtle and you are likely to break something, however, you will look cool doing it and become part of a sub-culture bordering on anti-establishment. This is the key to the “BUZZ” – there are no rules. Who doesn’t have a rebel inside wanting to get out, who wants to fly, jump, ski or escape from the mundane? Red Bull developed a safe way of escape through association: energy, danger and youth.…
