Understanding the struggle that people with mental illnesses go through is the first step to being able to help those with mental illnesses. When we are able to realize that the strenuous battle against mental illnesses is a tough one to fight, we are able to open ourselves up more to those that have to fight this never ending battle, so that these people are then able to talk to us about the difficulties they are facing. In the book, after Alice is first diagnosed with alzheimer's, she feels very isolated from her family and co-workers, because they do not understand what she is going through so she feels like she has no one to talk to.
