•Jonathan Kozol's "Still Separate Still Unequal" he explains how he visits various urban schools. The children voice their opinions and say how they feel forgotten and unimportant. They gave their view on their school and explained how they longed for better things like other children had. Kozol pointed out many problems with education such as unqualified teachers, lack of supplies, and schools on bad conditions. In urban schools most teachers were under paid underqualified and had no relationship with their students. • and supplies and some schools didn't offer students playgrounds, gyms or libraries. Kozol provides examples of how the wealthy view this situation. The rich do not think money will solve this problem because money will not provide a better education, and yet they spend thousands of dollars on their children’s high end education.
The children of the rich are bought an unfair advantage because they get preliminary education, such as preschools and other programs for even younger toddlers. Minority children do not get this chance and even if those chances where available they would not be able to afford them or qualify for them. At the end Kozol proposes a call to action. He encourages society to take notice of this growing problem and take action towards making a change. Kozol states that we have allowed this discrepancy to go on for too long and that we, as
Americans, have the responsibility to right this enormous wrong.

    I am reviewing Jonathan Kozol’s auto-biography, Death at an Early Age. This piece of literature provides the reader with an in-depth, personable account of schools of the 1960’s and the corruption that had flourished. Throughout this piece Kozol told of grim stories about public schools throughout Boston, Massachusetts; many of which would be incredibly disturbing.     Do we give children too many trophies or should children under a certain age egg a trophy? In 2003 my sister participated in competitive cheerleading. She was only three but they had routines that they had to do. Everyone in her age group got a trophy for participation. The trophy made her proud & want to keep up the hard work; she did not know that it was a trophy for participation, she thought it was for her hard work. In 2013 debate.org took a survey and 73% of people said children should NOT get a participation trophy and their main argument was that it will not teach kids to try hard. 27% of the people who took the survey said YES, kids should get trophies because they worked up enough courage to go out and try. I have very mixed feelings about this. Kids have a different mind set than adults. When a child sees someone with a trophy and they don't have one then they feel sad. I believe that trophies should not be given for participating but a ribbon or something should be given to children under a certain age. That way they know they did good but if they want a trophy then they need to try harder. But not every age group should get a ribbon or trophy just for participating. Competition is healthy and they need to be taught that in the real world you have to try your hardest if you want something; there's always going to be someone who wants the trophy just as bad as you, but are going to practice and try really hard to get it and if you don't try hard then you won't get the trophy.…

    Throughout class we have began to learn about dyads and the importance of them in human development. “Dyad” is a term Bronfenbrenner believed played a key role in human development. “A dyad is formed whenever two persons pay attention to or participate in one another’s activities” (Bronfenbrenner 1979, 56). In other words dyads are when a minimum of two people are involved in an ongoing relationship or interaction with each other. Bronfenbrenner describes three different types of dyads; these include observational dyad, joint activity dyad, and primary dyad. An observational dyad “occurs when one member is paying close and sustained attention to the activity of the other, who, in turn, at least acknowledges the interest being shown” A joint activity dyad is one in which the two participants perceive themselves as doing something together” and lastly, “a primary dyad is one that continues to exist phenomenologically for both participants even when they are not together” (Bronfenbrenner, Shelton 19). Within each type of dyad there are three different properties that Bronfenbrenner believed to be helpful in understanding the role of relations in development. These properties included, affect, power, and reciprocity. “Affect refers to the feelings people experience. How people feel about and act towards each other creates the emotional tone of a relationship…positive, warm, loving…negative, cold, unloving” (Bronfenbrenner, Shelton 22). “Power refers to both the relative strength of each person in the relationship, and to their influence on each other” (22).     In today’s world people would like to think that, in America at least, all are equal and free to live happy and peaceful lives. After all part of the United States National Anthem states that America is the “land of the free and the home of the brave” (Star). So one could assume that this statement is true, however, there is a minority group in America that is far from equal. They are typically looked at with disgust and sometime outright hatred. One might ask; why is this group subjected to such hatred and intolerance? What did they do to deserve that kind of horrid treatment? The answer is that they are not heterosexuals, but instead are homosexuals. Many people today are against homosexuality and especially against a homosexual’s right to marry his or her partner. The topic of same sex-marriage is a controversial topic in America today, as is evident from several different religious organizations and media outlets. A great example of some of the hatred that the Lesbian, Gay, Bi, and Transgender community, referred to as the LGBT community, comes from the Westboro Baptist Church. Their hatred for the LGBT community is painfully obvious from their many anti-gay protests. One of their anti-gay slogans boldly states that “God will not have fag marriage” (Westboro) which shows an obvious distain for the LGBT community. So, the question exists should America allow the LGBT community to be able to marry their partners of the same sex?
