Gemma proves herself to be a courageous survivor under horrific conditions. Discuss.
Introduction: Gemma was put under massive amounts of stress whilst she was stolen, living through many incidents that could have ended in life or death consequences. As Gemma had no idea whether she would be living or dying during her times with Ty, she may as well risk her life if there is a slight chance she could save herself during these actions. Gemma endured through many struggles during her time in the dessert. She survived escaping Ty’s capture and being scorched by the sun. She survived being bitten by a poisonous snake. And over all, she survived being stolen.
Body 1: Gemma took courageous steps to be able to take her ideas of escaping Ty’s Custody and having the realisation that she might not survive. Taking the old, dirty, needle from the sewing machine once again took massive courage for Gemma because what if it didn’t work out? What if Gemma then had to live with the consequences? Who knows what Ty would have done to Gemma because of his anger. Getting into Ty’s car and knowing she might not escape must have been horrific for Gemma.’ But I knew why. Because it was my only chance; because I didn’t know when I’d leave this place again’ page 197. Gemma just had to take the chance, she didn’t belong in the Australian outback with Ty and there might not have been any other chances for her to escape.
Body 2: Gemma was starting to warm up to Ty by this time in the book. Maybe realising that Ty wasn’t such a bad guy after all. He was just desperate for love, and he wanted Gemma to give him that. Once Gemma had realised there was no way she was going to escape Ty, she just had to except that he was all she had now, and that they might as well get along .’It’s hard to hate someone once you understand them’ But of course Gemma could never fully forgive Ty for taking her away, and tearing her from her family back in England. Living had become a complete struggle for her, and all she wanted was to die. ‘What could be worse? Dying? It could be much worse than being in the middle of nowhere, looking out at nothing. Never being able to get away from it, and for all I know, I could be waiting to be killed anyway’ page 83. Once again, Gemma survived the feeling of nothingness. Because Gemma knew she was strong enough to live through this.
Body 3: Towards the end of the book, Gemma endured through a massive struggle. Being bitten by a snake in the Australian outback. There’s no way Gemma could have survived without Ty’s help. And this is one time Gemma is completely thankful for Ty. There’s nothing he cared about more than Gemma. And if there was any time Gemma was in danger, Ty would be there. ‘Don’t worry, it’s OK’ you were over and over, ‘I’ll keep you safe’ page 250. This was one time Gemma was unable to survive by herself. But being able to keep herself calm was brave of Gemma, and without Ty’s help, she wouldn’t have been able to survive and escape without Ty’s help.
Conclusion: Overall, the whole book is about survival. Gemma survived every single struggle that came her way during the book. But mostly every time, she wouldn’t be able to be a survivor without Ty’s help, so of course Gemma is thankful for Ty. She was brave enough to keep herself sane through the whole kidnapping and dangers she endured, and for that, Gemma is a true survivor.
