Although Tessie protests the drawing, the villagers collect their stones and move in to throw them. In many ways, throwing the stones equates to the villagers casting their ballot in favor of continuing the lottery. Stoning is one of the oldest and most common forms of execution, but it is also one of the most symbolic. The stoning in Jackson’s “The Lottery” reminds one of the text in the Bible that relates to the woman who was caught in the act of adultery in John 8. In John 8 Jesus said to the crowd who is without sin cast the first stone and the crowd drops their stones and the woman was shown mercy while in “The Lottery” no one showed mercy on Tessie making it plain that one will be blamed for such violent act.
Death by tradition
One of the main theme in 'The Lottery' is symbolism. The theme symbolism helps to present human nature as corrupt, no matter how perfect one thinks of oneself, or how the environment may be. The short story deals with the insignificant nature of humanity when it comes to traditions it also shows how people lack compassion for each other and how people will flaunt situations due to tradition and
