In the 1780’s, France stood as one of Europe's great nations. But people were starving and the commoners were constantly giving away their money to the rich. They barely were able to dress in anything and most of them had no shoes to wear. Every night bread was the main dish they ate and their houses had rats and other insects living with them. In the 1780’s the harvest was very bad, which made the price for bread even more expensive. Because of costly wars France was in huge debt and raised taxes on the commoners, and they were also the only ones that worked. The nobles pay taxes to the king, but they just taxed the commoners. One half of the population was unemployed and bread cost was rising. The people thought they were going to get attacked by the king, so they went to the prison to get gunpowder to protect themselves, and also wanted to free the prisoners. Officially 98 people were killed during the attack. The event became one of the defining moments in the Revolution because from that day the French Revolution started.
The march on Versailles:
On October 4, 1789, a crowd of women over 7,000 demanding bread for their families gathered others including some men, and marched toward Versailles, marching through rain they arrived soaking wet. They demanded to see the Baker, the Baker's wife, and the Baker's boy. The King agreed to meet with some of the women and promised to give all the bread in Versailles to the crowd. But they wanted more. They took the king back to Paris and forced him to never return to Versailles. Then later was forced to sign the constitution. The royal family tried to flee to Austria but they were caught and the king was sentenced to treason. In result of that he had his head chopped off. By this happening, it helped democracy because the king signed the constitution, and was later killed so they didn't have to deal with him any
