The delineation of the various stages (forming, storming, norming, and performing) is somewhat blurred in Remember the Titans, making it more difficult to define each stage clearly. Because conflict occurs consistently throughout the entire movie, one could argue that the storming stage remains in the background and is not entirely eliminated during the movie. When analyzing this movie, it is important to remember that, ultimately, this is a Disney creation where real life events many have been altered to accommodate the artistic needs of the film, such as Coach Yost’s role.
The start of forming is apparent in the beginning of the movie when the different race groups first walk in and meet. According to Tuckman’s model the members should be positive but they really are not. They are more anxious than anything else and you can sense the tension in the movie. stage, the players try to establish where they would fit on the new team. As we progress through the forming stage, we come upon a critical part of the movie. Coach Boone feels it is necessary to move from the forming stage into the storming stage. Coach Boone accomplishes this in the part of the movie where he makes the players come off the bus and sit in the same positions they had on the way to camp. As the team leaves for training camp, it is clear that they are in the storming phase. There are multiple instances of hostility and tension between the black and white players.
Also, a good example of storming is found when Boone makes his players room with players of the same positions rather than by race. During this scene, there is a lot of conflict demonstrated but with no communication. Approximately the next ten minutes are all conflict and storming. Arguments over who gets which bed and what posters to hang on walls eventually gives way to a fist fight between Gary (the white captain) and Julius (the black team leader) who were assigned to room together. Another good example of storming is when Julius criticizes Gary for being such a poor captain. Although there is conflict, this is an extremely important juncture in the movie because Gary then changes his actions and yells at a teammate for not doing his job blocking.
As practice gets underway, there is constant conflict between teammates and coaches alike. Yoast makes it obvious that he doesn’t always agree with what Boone is doing by his facial expressions and his tone of voice. At one point, Yoast talks to Boone about introducing new plays and letting the boys have some fun and Boone is not open or willing to hear any new ideas. Boone is pushing his players to the brink, in their faces yelling at them and punishing them if they miss a tackle or fumble a football
Boone tells everyone that they must get to know every one of their teammates and report back to him on what they are learning. Some of the players start to bond and form new relationships, which lays the groundwork for the team to progress into the norming stage.
How did the “leader” deal with conflict within his team?
Hersey and Blanchard characterized leadership style in terms of the amount of Task Behavior and Relationship Behavior that the leader provides to their followers. They categorized all leadership styles into four behavior types, which they named S1 to S4:
S1: Telling - is characterized by one-way communication in which the leader defines the roles of the individual or group and provides the what, how, why, when, and where to do the task
S2: Selling - while the leader is still providing the direction, he or she is now using two-way communication and providing the socioemotional support that will allow the individual or group being influenced to buy into the process.
S3: Participating - this is now shared decision making about aspects of how the task is accomplished and the leader is providing less task behaviors while maintaining high relationship behavior.
S4: Delegating - the leader is still involved in decisions; however, the process and responsibility has been passed to the individual or group. The leader stays involved to monitor progress.
Regarding the movie, at the stage of storming during the standoff between the players at the dorm, Coach Boone is still in leadership style S1.
He tells his players and coaches what to do with no room for suggestions or input. He makes sure that it is clear that he is the final authority on and off the field. Coach Yoast is somewhere between S2 and S3. His concern for the relationships with his players is evident when he questions Boone for pushing them too hard or when he wants to introduce some new plays to let the boys have some fun. He is supportive and encouraging of his players at practice and motivates them without being too harsh. This difference in coaching is good in that is provides a good balance between two extremes. However, it is harmful to the team in that the coaches are clearly not on the same page so that makes it hard for the players to work together when it is obvious that the coaching staff is struggling to work
together.
Who played “task” roles on the team? Explain your choices
Group task roles are roles that help a group develop and accomplish its goals.
a. The initiator-contributor proposes goals, suggests way of approaching tasks, and recommends procedures for approaching a problem or task.
b. The information seeker asks for information, view points, and suggestions about the problem or task.
c. The information giver offers information, viewpoints, and suggestions about the problem or task.
d. The coordinator clarifies and synthesizes various ideas in an effort to tie together the work of the members.
e. The orienter summarizes, points to departures from goals, and raises questions about discussion direction.
f. The energizer stimulates the group to higher levels of work and better quality.
In the movie, coach Boone is clearly the energizer, since trough his actions the group works better and with higher quality. Coach Yoast plays a role of information giver and information seeker, since he sometimes questions the procedures of coach Boone and other times he provides valuable information to Boone. At some point Gary also portrays a role of contributor and energizer since he criticizes Gary for being a poor captain, but at the same time makes the leadership position of Julius better. Some other members of the coaches team play the role of coordinators, since they provide valuable information to the main coaches. Finally most of the team has a role of information seeker since they need guidance to play an specific role in the team
Would you consider this team effective? How do you measure that?
