It also shows that Bernard is an evil man who shouldn't be trusted and would make a terrible husband.
In another example, Sophia, a young woman who has been living with her godfather Bernard de Cressac, is lamenting the fact that she is engaged to her godfather when she says, "I wanted to go to Odette 'gone crazy' and Ducky moaning, but if I went downstairs, I would have to face Bernard in a fury, and at this moment I couldn't bear it. When I remembered the way he had treated my family, hot anger rose, strangling my throat. My fine fiancé." Sophia's complaint against Monsieur de Cressac shows that she is regretting trusting him as easily as she did, which is displayed by the sarcastic comment 'my fine fiancé.' If she had been more careful around him, she might not be in the predicament she's in. Later, Sophia is thinking about what her godfather will do to her when he comes back to find her with the bones of his other wives. She just recently discovered that her godfather killed his previous wives, and she shouldn't have trusted him. She thinks, "he would prefer to pierce my heart with a
sword." Sophia is thinking this because Bernard did this to all his other wives. She believes this will happen to her. Bernard told her that all of his other wives died by other causes, such as sickness and suicide, and deceives her into loving him. She falls for this because he was a nice loving person with a few quirks until he turned into a monster. The theme shows the reader that being wary about who you fall for is crucial, and to may be more careful in the future.
