1. Introduction
The case study is analysing the performance of Watsons Engine Components and in what extent the company is using practices in the management of people. To make things more clearly, the author is answering two questions and also giving some recommandations. Watsons is an independently owned company in the North-East of England with 200 employees in total. The company is producing parts for car engines and has in years been successful in maintaining its market share. But changes in the business enviroment make things difficult to sustain.

2. Question 1:
To what extent are the existing practices in the management of people linked to the strategic needs of the business in relation to the changing business environment? Identify where the links might be and how they could be improved.

The existing practices of the company are analysed and according to a few points of the „Seven Practices of Successful Organizations“ from Jeffrey Pfeffer some recommandations are given. As starting point, the author takes the main strategic needs, in a changing business environment of the company and links them to the existing practices of the company and how they can be improved.     The first concern would be the effect the change would have to our customers, shareholders, employees, departments, and the community. There would be plenty of communication session regarding the change. Employees would not only be given information about the positive and the negative aspects of the new concept but would have opportunities to ask questions and voice their concerns as well. This will help to do any problem-solving in the groundbreaking stage. One negative aspect of my organization is that the employees were not given any information or asked their opinions regarding the move. There should have been surveys, questionnaires or meetings to give and get some feedback. The strategies and goals of an organization rely on employees’ involvement as well as commitment. There would be plenty of training offered to everyone. The Human Resource Management aspects must include acquiring, preparing, compensating, and training and developing for the employees. There will need to be policies changes made as well, employees would be asked their input in developing the new policies. Boundaries that were previously established would be abandoned. Human resource management has become an integral part of almost all the companies all over the world. Human resource management concerns not only how peoples are managed but also how managing people could maximize the competitive advantage in that market sector (Tyson, 1991 p2). Business strategies are defined as a strategy of a particular business unit (Tyson 2000, p66). Human resource(HR) strategy is a series of policies and programs designed to achieve a people management objective (Tyson, 2000 p66) .SHRM on a broader term is a overall sense of mission and direction, an appreciation in general terms of where the company is going and why. This may include articulation of core values, distinctive competencies and corporate vision. SHRM also focuses on translating the complex and dynamic set of internal and external variables, which an organization faces, into a future oriented framework which can then be implemented on a day to day basis (Watson, 1999). In the subsequent paragraphs, This study tries to explain why and how different automobile companies adopt different business and HR strategies. For this study focuses on works of two authors Porter (1980) who has classified business competitive strategy into three types: cost leadership, differentiation, and focus and of that of Schuler and Jackson (1987) who has classified business strategy into three types: cost reduction, innovation, and quality enhancement (Huang 1999).
