Petronas Chemicals Group Bhd, PCHEM is in the chemical business began in 1985 with the production of ammonia and urea. Since then, PCHEM’s operations have grown significantly both organically and through joint ventures with other key players in the petrochemicals industry.
PCHEM began their first ethylene production in 1995, and the OPTIMAL Companies commenced operations in 2002 as joint ventures with Dow Chemical. They acquired Dow Chemical's interests in the OPTIMAL Companies in 2009 bringing all 3 of these entities under their control.
PCHEM have continued to grow their business and expand their operations through the construction of new plants as well as capacity increases in existing plants. In recent years, production capacities at the Gurun and Bintulu production facilities have been expanded, and in 2009, their Mega Methanol plant in Labuan commenced operations,
