Opening case-1: Flight cancellation in USA
In USA, 39991 flights have been cancelled during Dec,2013-Jan.2014.
42533 flights, however, sat on the tarmac on different airports across USA for more than three hours.
In 67% cases, these happened due to operational problems, including delay in incoming connecting flight, shortage of pilots, inefficient scheduling of flights, poor crew coordination etc.

Different airlines reduced their operations up to 40% in the airports like
Chicago O’Hare, Dallas-Fort Worth, Newark Liberty, San Francisco, La
Guardiana, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta, Denver, Los Angeles, Detroit, JFK

Airlines companies had to spend US$ 27500 on an average per flight for rearrangements like providing alternative flights, hotel accommodation, refund back of the ticketing price etc.

The operational cost of the airlines companies also increased up to 39% during the period for such developments.

Opening Case-2: National Cyclone Risk Mitigation
Project, Odisha, India
This is a World Bank sponsored GIS based project involving National Remote
Sensing Centre (Under the Department of Space Technology, Government of
India), National Disaster Rehabilitation Organization (Another Government of India organization), Government of Odisha.
The total project cost was US$ 1.3 billion as on 2013.
The project successfully forecasted 3 major natural calamities, but most effectively the ‘Phailin’ Cyclonic storm on October 12, 2013.
Based on the input from the GIS, the whole machinery evacuated and rehabilitated almost 5 million people on war footing from risk prone zones across coastal Odisha and
