Strategic thinking focuses on the strategy. The question is how managers should organize their thinking to achieve a successful strategic reasoning process. The ability to think strategically, is crucial to remaining competitive in an increasingly turbulent and global environment.
Campbell and Alexander(1997) came up with an approach to strategic thinking. They delineate three elements; (1) insight into operating issues: with benchmarking other organizations, process re-engineering and total quality management organizations should look for opportunities to increase continuously the way they do things, (2) future gazing: exponents of chaos theory warn of the need always to be ready for the unexpected and unpredictable, therefore, the emphasis is on discontinuous change and the idea of reinventing and hence controlling developments in the industry. Of all the Athenian leaders during the time of the Sicily invasion, Nicias possessed the clearest vision and a demonstrated ability to think strategically. He provided a comprehensive interpretation of the problems the Athenians might face. He showed a strategic understanding of the volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguous nature of the expedition. Nicias applied critical thinking, evaluated the information that the Egestaeans presented, developed valid assumptions and inferences from Alcibiades’ speech, clarified his concern, and presented his point of view that detailed the implications of the expedition. Once the Athenians made the decision to invade Sicily, Nicias presented a concise strategy detailing the ends, ways, and means that mitigated the risks for possible success. Although the Athenians did not adopt his strategy as a whole, due to internal factors and competing interest, his strategy is a classic example of applying strategic thinking to deal with complex problems.…

I also focused on influences that global competition and culture have on managerial decisions, because the environment changes constantly. The Vietnam War was a battle that seems to have taught the American Military and Government officials a lot about cooperative working and strategic planning. Each American involved most likely has a different story to tell about the War from the ground soldiers all the way up to President Johnson. However, each participated in a mission driven cooperative work environment with many different thinking styles. These styles included strategic thinkers, tactical planners, and logisticians to name a few. Each thinking style plays a critical role in the development and progression in an organization like the armed forces in the Vietnam War.…
