Strategies for Overcoming Procrastination
Strategies for Overcoming Procrastination Keanna Jones Gen 200 March 18, 2010 Instructor: Jenta Young “You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step” says Martin Luther King Jr. (Finest Quotes, Lift Your Spirit Up, 2010). Sounds simple enough to some, but for many people taking the first step can be quite difficult. In other words, putting off something intentionally that should be done is called procrastinating (Merriam-Webster, 2010). There are lots of reasons that people can’t take that first step for such as having a busy schedule, stress, afraid of failure or wanting complete perfection; because of this, people tend to wait until the last minute to do things, lye to themselves, do other things instead of what needs to be done and avoid making decisions. Actually, waiting until the last minute gives some people just enough pressure to complete their task or time to refresh their minds. Therefore, procrastinating can be a positive thing for some, but for others it can be a barrier that hinders one from accomplishing the simplest-everyday tasks to more long term goals. So for those people that consider procrastination a problem, once you figure out how and why you procrastinate, then you find a solution for your problem. “There are many ways to avoid success in life, but the most sure-fire just might be procrastination. Procrastinators sabotage themselves. They put obstacles in their own path. They actually choose paths that hurt their performance” (Staff, 2005). Thus, procrastination can be a problem for many people. Waiting until the last minute to do things or not making decisions can cause detrimental side-effects on ones emotional and physical state. Subsequently, it can be stressful and cause you to feel hopeless or depressed which often delays or stops people from achieving their ultimate goals or becoming successful, but it is possible to prevail over it. In order to overcome procrastination, first you need to

Most of the time procrastination isn’t always a bad thing. It could be good if you use your time wisely and think of good ideas. But on the other hand, it could be bad because, if you just sit around and do absolutely nothing. If you manage your time carefully, you would get done a lot faster and easier. As said in sentence 8, “Dr. Perry generously acknowledges that he has stood on the shoulders of iants, in particular Robert Benchley , the Algonquin Round Table Member. In 1930, Benchley revealed how he mustered the willpower to pore through scientific magazines and build a bookshelf when an article was due.”…

The art of procrastination has troubled high school kids for quite some time now. Im sitting here typing my own essay at the eleventh hour, hoping that as the deadline approaches I can piece together an essay to save my grade. “Procrastination is for the efficient at heart”, this quote captures the procrastinators only strength: the ability to make the most out of the time they have. Most students will crack as the pressure of meeting the deadline with quality work overbears them, as they regretfully wish they spent their time wiser. Few will rise up to the challenge and meet the standards, but what separates the students who succeed and those who miserably fail?…

I’ve overcome procrastination because instead of staying on the couch and not doing the dishes I stand and actually do them, and to be honest it felt good because I don’t have to do it later like the author said in the article because it's worse in our future because the dishes might pile up even more or you can get in trouble for not getting up and doing it right away overall I think I have overcome procrastination so far. What helped be successful on facing procrastination is actually wanting on doing it and there's not wanting to get in trouble. Procrastination is what drives people from their work, study, and even determination. Focus is what is needed in everyday lives, and though it is tempting to "delay" what is needed to be done, no excuse is worth it so instead of just “delaying it” just do…

There’s several reasons why people, including myself, procrastinate. First, let me give a formal definition of what I’ll be discussing. The dictionary defines procrastination as putting off doing something, especially out of habitual carelessness or laziness; to put off something needlessly. I’ll be elaborating on this definition since they’re good reasons but it goes deeper than this. There’s laziness, personal issues, and carelessness and all of these things cause that dysfunctional thing called procrastination.…

Procrastination can be caused by several factors. Laziness is a distinct possibility, but it is also possible that a person simply doesn't feel well or have much energy. Sometimes we think a project will take more brain power or muscle grease than we want to put out at the time, so we put it off. However, probably the most prevalent cause behind procrastination is being a perfectionist.…

College is difficult, it demands a lot of your time, and attention. Have you ever said the words,” I will do it later”? We are all procrastinators in some way or another; the difference is some people stick to their deadlines (with the proneness to misjudge the amount of time it takes to finish). According to Center for Student Excellence (CSE) advisors many college students find themselves waiting until the last minute to study or complete assignments, and students often find themselves procrastinating due to their newfound independence, a multitude of distractions and a lack of motivation (Patrick, 2014). One explanation for procrastination is that it is a choice. We have a choice to complete a task now instead of later. Another explanation is that it is a way to deal with anxiety, boredom, guilt, frustration and anger. When we procrastinate it can adversely affect our health. In a study done in 2007, researchers found that while at the beginning of the semester students who procrastinated showed less signs of illness and lower levels of stress than non-procrastinators, by the end of the semester, the procrastinators were found to have higher levels of stress and illness…
