They became the first Summer Host City to embed sustainability into all aspects of the organization of the Games. An extremely positive message in Sustainable Event management is set by the fact that the organizers set the goal of ensuring that all the events and related activities hosted by or associated with London 2012 were organized in a sustainable fashion. This has helped improve the image of the LOCOG and allay the fears of the local community as to how the new infrastructure and event will affect the locality. These actions also perfectly fit in with the city’s long-term goal to brand London as a sustainable destination.
All this made them a model of sustainable development for all future mega-events worldwide.
This has set an example in Sochi 2014 and Rio 2016 Olympics Committees setting up commissions and studying Environmental impact of hosting Olympics and the prospects of conducting Sustainable Olympics. It inspired a new kind of certification ISO 20121 for Sustainable Event Management.

The question of sustainable development has become a major issue of the 21st century notably due to the climate change. While the original call for sustainable development in Bruntland Report (which goal was to unite countries to pursue sustainable development together) discussed the application of the principles, tourism was not specially discussed’ (Hall, 1998) Yet, there has been an increasing recognition of the role that tourism could play in sustainable development. As it is a driving force of the economy and a powerful instrument of development, it has a role to play to limit its negative impacts whether they are cultural, environmental or economic. That is to say, adopting the principles of sustainable development to tourism. ‘Sustainable tourism is an extension of the concept of sustainable development” (J.Swarbrooke, 1999). Nowadays the concept of sustainability is widely recognized in many corporations, organizations, government sectors and even in school or university. From my opinion, Sustainability is needed on a global (macro) scale, on macro-micro scale (government, NGO’s and business) and also on an individual level. The causes are: Greed and rent seeking, scarcity of resources, misuse of power, wrong moral and ethical standards. The Effects are: Climate change, rising inequality in almost all parts of the world (GINI Index), consumerism, corruption, abuse of ecosystems, etc.. Civil societies, governments and some businesses are asking for change and the creation of a “balanced social justice”. In case of abuse of social justice by one of the three major “participants” of the system (business, governments, NGOs), a vicious circle will occur and the organism is doomed to fail.…
