Structural Unemployment
The structural unemployment in the Bahamas
Tourism and banking which are the Bahamas’ primary and secondary industries are owned by foreign sectors, the gross domestic product is at $3065130000 and total household income is at $1793372500.
The Bahamas suffers from Dualism which is the doctrine that reality consists of two basic opposing elements, often taken to be mind and matter (or mind and body), or good and evil. There should be a dualism by types of ownership whether a foreign sector or Bahamian sector. If owned by Bahamians it should cater to the Bahamian people, there should be a low wage level, shouldn’t require a high level of education, there should be a reasonable high elasticity of demand for labour, a low level of technology and unsophisticated operations. The Bahamian sector would include restaurants, bars, barber shops, vender for fruits/vegetables, farmers, fishermen and local manufacturers. If owned by the Foreign earning would be tied directly to foreign businesses, education level would be high, wages would also be high, elasticity of demand for labour would be inelastic. The Foreign sector would include banks, hotels, law and accounting firms and other businesses that would benefit from foreign investments.

structural unemployment can be reduced by providing government training programs to the structurally unemployed, paying subsidies to firms that provide training to displaced workers, helping the structurally unemployed to relocate to areas where jobs exist, and inducing prospective workers to continue or resume their education.

The term business cycle (or economic cycle) refers to economy-wide fluctuations in production or economic activity over several months or

Economists identify business fluctuations in the economy by measuring the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) output. This fluctuation of output is called the business cycle. McConnell (2009) states, “Many economist prefer to talk of business fluctuations rather than cycles because cycles imply regularity while fluctuations do not (p. 984). The business cycle is distinguished by four phases: Peak, Recession, Trough, and Expansion, always starting with the peak (McConnell, 2009). The motion of the business cycle propels with alternating rises and declines in the level of economic activity with each portion varying on duration and intensity. At the peak of the cycle, business activity has reached a temporary maximum. Here the economy is at full employment and the real output is close to the economy’s capacity. With a price level rise during this phase, either resources or consumers will eventually dwindle causing a decrease in output. A decline in total output, income, and employment of the business cycle is called the recession period (McConnell, 2009). During a recession the GDP will decrease, manifesting a notable increase in unemployment which leads to economic hardships in many sectors of the economy.…

Life and Debt is a very insightful and revealing documentary about the economy woes of Jamaica and the possible causes of its economic down turn. Watching this documentary, I was in shock because I have always known Jamaica had economic issues, but I never knew how bad they were. Jamaica suffers from poverty, a struggling economy, inflation and interference from outside investors like the United States of America and Latin America despite being richly blessed with natural resources and agriculture. Jamaica got their independence in 1962 from the United Kingdom, it has always struggled with its economy and even tried to use its agricultural resources to boost the economy, but to no avail. As the economy became more and more severely immersed in financial problems, the then Prime Minister Michael Manley struck a deal in 1977 with a group of economic institutions like World Bank and IMF to loan money to Jamaica in exchange for removal of trade restrictions and subsidized exports. Twenty five years down the line, it is sad to see that Jamaica is in debt to the tune of seven billion dollars to the IMF. The deal ruined Jamaica’s economy, and Stanley Fischer (second in command at IMF) is interviewed throughout the documentary and he defends the deal, with reasons why it was a good idea at the time and how beneficial the deal was to the Jamaican economy, even though we can see different in the documentary. The deal with the IMF disrupted the Islands agricultural and industrial economy, thereby causing the economy to nose-dive. Farming, agriculture, cultivation and dairy production has become almost non-existent. Markets have being seized and policies put in places which are extremely unfavorably to the locals. There is mass interference from growers and merchants in the US and Latin America over the growth of fruits and vegetables, which are now imported by the aforementioned. This makes imports more expensive than the local produce (if any), the country has become a…

First I would like to address the luxurious resorts and their beaches. Currently there are 2 major big name hotels in the bahamas, atlantis and bahamar, but today I will talk about one, Atlantis. At Atlantis there is much to do with or without money. Serving up beachside cocktails and an endless list of activities in a setting fit for royalty, the all-inclusive resorts that decorate many of the islands are out of this world. As you pay attention to the scenery you notice the soothing and relaxing flow of the atmosphere. At Atlantis its not shocking to see a well known actor or music star walking pass you. According to hotels.com the Atlantis has a 4.5 out 5 star rating and is considered as one the best luxurious hotels in the world. There are lots of casinos to visit in the Bahamas, giving gambling tourists a chance to win some money while vacationing. The Atlantis Resort is one of a handful of Vegas-styled casinos that serve up decent gambling odds and cheap drinks. The Bahamas luxury resorts and beaches offer many different activities for tourist satisfaction. If you feels as though luxury is the norm how about trying something different.…

When most Americans think about Jamaica, we think about the beautiful beaches, warm weather, and friendly people that make it a fabulous vacation spot. 1. Jamaica has the potential to be amazing. Jamaica could be to be one of the top tourist destinations in the world. Jamaica can thrive in its economy by producing and selling their products. Finally, Jamaica has the people; the people who want to make a difference can and will make a difference if they have the drive to do so. When watching the documentary, “Life and Debt”, I was astonished to see the diminished economy of what Jamaicans call their home. As beautiful as Jamaica may seem to the tourists portrayed in the film, they didn’t see the true native life from the island and those struggling just to feed their families. Certainty, the International Economy System has had its ups and downs in each country. However, as the documentary showed Jamaica is well versed in the effects that the Internationally Economy System can have on the economy and how it can turn it around very quickly.…
