The Civil War was one of the bloodiest wars in history- more than 620,000 people died by fighting for the Union or the Confederacy. All those lives that got sacrificed, but, we still, to this day, fail to understand the reasons they perished for they stood for what was right in their eyes. The Union was anti-slavery and despised the act. They fought to make sure that in the future, slavery and racism wouldn't exist anymore. The Confederacy fought for the fact that slavery is good and should stay for generations to come- but they only wanted them to do plantation work. Why hasn’t America still learned its lesson? The Civil War was a time of terrible despair- for the slaves. They were tortured in many different ways if they didnt do the hard labor- even if they were too young or old. Thousands of slaves were split from their families. But it wasn't only the slaves that had to go through the pain- millions of families split themselves to join their sides of the Civil War. “A century and a half after the civil war, many white Americans, especially in the South, seem to take the idea that slavery caused the war as a personal accusation. The point, however, is not to condemn individuals or an entire region of the country, but to face candidly the central role of slavery in our national history Only in this way can Americans arrive at a deeper, more nuanced understanding of our past”( final paragraph; Foner.E). America not being able to face our malnovent past is an issue because it causes the U.S to not understand what they have done wrong. Eric Foner talks about acceptance in his paragraph. “The civil war continues” says Foner. The Civil War was caused by by the following conflicts: economic and social differences between the North and the South, states vs. federal rights, slavery/belief that white men were better than colored people, the growth of the abolition movement, and the election of Abraham Lincoln as President of the United States. White supremacy was an issue during the civil war and the reconstruction period and it still is a major problem today. In truth, the idea of white supremacy has existed since the Antebellum period, and it will keep existing until it is finally realised that the color of skin should not determine how people are treated. But individuals will always be reminded of the idea of white supremacy from the reminders that currently roam every part of our country- whites that don't treat blacks right, violence against dark-skinned people, the KKK wreaking havoc, and other organizations like the “ Daughters of the Confederacy.
