Even though he had worked on the same group of people during the same period of time, he had shown the struggles they faced from different perspectives. In “The Grapes of Wrath” he showed how a migrating family struggled during the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl years. While in “Of Mice and Men” he illustrated the average daily life of a single migrating worker. The scarce of jobs made life harder for both kinds of people. But it was a greater deal of problem for the migrating families than the individual migrating workers. The single migrating worker had less responsibilities. They only had themselves to take care of and depended on themselves. If things got worse in a certain workplace, they could just get out of there and look for a new place. But for the migrating family, like Joad family in “The Grapes of Wrath”, things weren’t that easy. It was far more complicated and difficult for them to survive at that time. The family members relied on each other. They not only had themselves to take care of but also had to take care of other family members. They couldn’t just leave a place whenever they wanted. A single man could sleep or live in any place but a family can’t. There are Children to be taken care of. The migrating families had to accept the lowest unfair wages or else they would starve to death. All these struggles and difficulties are portrayed in many books and articles of Steinbeck.
