Motivation To begin with, what does motivation mean? According to the business dictionary article, “motivation is an internal and external factor that stimulates desire and energy in people to take action” (Business Dictionary). In other words, motivation is what causes humans to act in a particular way. Moreover, it appeals the social, emotional, and mental forces that stimulate a particular behavior. In this essay, I will be writing about how scientists for BAT industries, one of the world’s biggest cigarette makers, were inventing ways to make it harder for people to stop smoking by innovating new substances to make their cigarettes worth buying.
Firstly, BAT scientists are looking for ways to make an addictive product that will include nicotine. One of their inventions include the Y-1 tobacco. Since cigarette makers expand tobacco to save money in an attempt to give more air and less leaf to customers, on the contrary, Y-1 tobacco released nicotine more slowly and steadily as it burned, giving the smoker a nice and smoother smoke (p 318). This makes the user feel relaxed, and enjoy the cigarette while smoking it. The label on this cigarette packet read “Increased smoker response is asso-ciated with nicotine reaching the brain more quickly” (Associated Press, 1998). In other words, the principle reason of increased smoker response is due to the speed of which nicotine flows to the brain. Moreover, the faster it reaches the brain, the larger the impact of the drug, and also the more addictive he/she will become to smoking cigarettes.
Secondly, another strategy BAT uses in order to make it extremely difficult for people to stop smoking cigarettes, BAT decided to use ammonia in its cigarettes. This technology incudes fee nicotine, which reaches the brain at a very fast pace making it much harder for smokers to give up on it. In addition, ammonia technology increases flavor to the cigarettes motivating more and more people to continue using the product. However, the ammonia technology proved insufficient due to that fact that only a limited amount could be used without making the smoke. Since BAT was the second leading cigarette manufacturer behind the Marlborough brand, there goal was to be ahead of the latter. In doing so, it made an attempt to discover more about nicotine. To do so, BAT’s scientists experimented with squirrels, mice, and etc. Additionally, they stuck conductors in adult smokers and measured changes in their both their brain and heart rates (Associated press, p 316). According to Green, the objective was to make the administration of nicotine better that meant making the administration more pleasanter or more convenient, with fewer undesirable psychological effects” (Associated Press, 1998). This quote explains BAT’s relentless attitude to continue to innovate new material in order to further their product. This is a vital factor in motivating more people in to preferring their product to its competitors.

Thirdly, BAT’s reluctance to abandon nicotine is an integral part of why people find it difficult to abandon cigarettes. Even though nicotine causes cardiovascular disease, and harms people’s arteries, hearts, and brains, more people seem to be addicted to it with all of these negative sides hat may eventually lead to death. Green concludes that “If the nicotine delivery is reduced below a threshold ‘satisfaction’ level, then surely smok-ers will question more readily why they are indulging in an expensive habit” (p 316). This quote depicts that if they reduce the nicotine level put in to cigarettes, by inventing synthetic nicotine substitutes, or a non-inhalable cigarette in order to dilute the smoke, they will more likely lose customers since the nicotine is the powerful substance that keeps them hooked to smoking. However, since BAT feared that government regulators might ask them to reduce the amount of nicotine that is being put in to cigarettes, they decided to change the form of nicotine in to cigarette. That means converting more bound nicotine in its products to free nicotine, in an attempt to reduce the amount of nicotine put in to cigarettes. This is an excellent method in order to motivate more and more people to smoke their cigarettes because it could promote a nicotine “reduction”, while more and more nicotine is being put in to cigarettes. http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/motivation.html
