Female student athletes have a dual roll in trying to maintain academic and athletic excellence while in college. These athletes are expected to perform at the highest athletic level possible, and then asked to sustain their physical appearance. “For some female college athletes, such concerns and pressures may contribute to eating disorders or disordered eating behaviors” (Greenleaf et al. 2009, p490). I believe female student athletes shouldn’t feel pressured into complying with society’s needs, by totally ignoring their own.…

Regardless of all this hard work, these athletes have nothing to show for it. A percentage of the athletes are black and come from poor inner city community where their families struggle to keep the bills paid and to keep food on the table. These black athletes are being taught at an early age that their education plays a back seat role to the glamour and money of professional sports. Black athletes are recruited by colleges not to pursue an education but to fill the stands and generate money for colleges and universities. These athletes perform at games and deserve some of the revenues for the services that they provide. A lot of money is being generated from college athletics. According to John Brill, a retired professional ice hockey player, “the NCAA makes over 6 billion dollars yearly.” All this money goes to support championships and programs that benefit student athletes and for building operations. The NCAA is supposed to be a non-profit organization but they sell jerseys with the star athletes names on them. The “student-athletes” get none of the money that is made by selling their name on the jerseys. Even though they get a free education with their scholarship, college athletes should be getting some compensation for their hard work and abilities because they are expected to play as a professional, a full ride scholarship does not cover every expense, they do not get the full education that they should,…

Did you know that college athletes are shorted million of dollars in monetary value? Of course, the obvious argument would be the athletes are receiving an expensive, high-quality education and that is sufficient. However, when really looking at the factual numbers, there is a huge discrepancy. College student athletes should be monetarily compensated in direct proportion to the revenue that is generated by the program’s university. Athletes are clearly being taken advantage of and exploited for hundred of millions and it must stop. According to the NCAA, college student athletes are not paid because of the fact the athletes are so called “amateurs.” Sounds a decent argument right? Wrong, these athletes all range anywhere from…

Becoming an athlete, let alone a college athlete, is not a path paved in gold. There are times you will be doubted, challenged, and cast aside. There will be mornings you are awake before the sun rises. There will be nights you cry yourself to sleep. You will push your body to points where it will fail. In fact, you might be blindsided by an injury that ends it all. There will be coaches that will give you a false sense of security or flat out lie to you, and there will be coaches that change your life. Your teammates might be your newest family, or they might be your worst enemy. This path is not for the fate of heart and there are no promises. But at the end of the day, if given the choice to do it all over again, any athlete will agree…
