The rate of freshman attrition tends to be larger than any other year. Each student withdraw before degree attainment results in lost revenue for the university. Contributing factors to students leaving an institution varies. Kampf and Teske (2013) suggests that student retention cannot be accredited to any one cause but rather a combination of factors. The retention of a student in higher education is typically attributed to student’s experience and perception of the institution. They propose that all campus departments have an obligation to assess their part in improving student retention. Equally, Tinto (1993) developed a theory predicting a strong association between academic and social integration in retention. Campus Recreation programming can have a positive influence on the student’s fulfilment with their institution of choice and their academic and social integration (Kampf & Teske, 2013). …show more content…
Studies looking at the relationship between recreation centers and retention discovered that recreational sports facilities and programming have an impact on preserving students enrollment. Henchy (2011) revealed that 31 percent of studied students specified that campus recreation programs and centers had impacted them to remain at their institution. Lindsay and Sessoms (2006) found 37.3 percent of students indicated an importance in recreational programming availability influencing in their retention at the university. Similarly, Belch, Gebel, and Maas (2001) indicated that student who utilized campus recreation programs during their freshman year were retained at a greater rate than their nonuser peers.     Seperating the SAs from the general student population, allowed several impactful factors to come to light. When faced with choosing a major, eligibility and availability issues can force a SA to choose a major that allows them to keep their comittment to team obligations and meet requirements to maintain their eligibility within NCAA standards, rather than choose based on their perosnal interests and goals (Navarro). Navarro found SAs that had an identity independent of their sports role and those who utilized the college resources outside of the athletic department, had a better grasp on what they wanted and how they could achieve it. The results of this study accentuated the need for additional resources tailored for SAs that go beyond the athlete role and that place a priority of the student part of the student-athlete identity. This research project and process relied on each individual’s honesty and individual experience and because of those limitations, it does not have external validity.     College students traditionally show pride towards their respective school. What makes students so enthusiastic for their school? In Laura Randall’s “Things You Only Do in College” and David Berreby’s “It Takes a Tribe” both writers explore college culture but come up with decidedly different results. Randall argues that college students’ traditions are embarrassing to the university, and students should be focusing on schoolwork not traditions; but Berreby suggests traditions are for the pride which students have for their school. In this essay I argue that students are passionate for their school, and the traditions they participate in are for the pride they have for the school. Randall discusses the traditions at various universities, or the hazing rituals for the fraternities and sororities on the many campuses. In her writing she looks disgusted that colleges are not trying to stop these “stupid traditions” in Randall’s mind. She states “Today’s traditions are more likely to involve nudity, fire, and intoxicants and be closely monitored by publicity-wary administrators” (Randall, 211). This quote shows the disappointment for college students and their traditions. Randall is saying there are not any traditions which are good for the university, or the people that participate. Randall implies that these traditions are embarrassing to the universities.
