• Introduction to Nike: Nike, Inc. is an incorporated company that designs, develops and markets worldwide athleticfootwear, apparel, equipment and accessories. Nike employs both traditional and non-traditional distribution channels in almost 200 countries with primary market regions in theUnited States, Europe, Asia Pacific, and the Americas. Nike has some 20,000 retailers worldwide including Nike factory stores, Nike stores, NikeTowns, Cole Haan stores, and Web sites which sell Nike's sports and leisure products. Nikeaccounts for 33% of the global market share in the athletic footwear industry. Nike, being an international organization, needs to focus on macro environmental factors.The external factor that affects brand/product Nike is political, economic, social andtechnology.
How did Nike get its name?
Nike is the goddess of victory in Roman and Greek mythology. Nike is renamed after the goddess Nike because it's said that Nike shoes gives you victory. Yesterday a few of my friends faced a small statue of a headless female angel. We found out that this headless angel was a Greek Godess named Nike who lost her head in battle. The Angels shape was similiar to the logo of Nike. 'We discussed and concluded that that's how the name Nike (the company) was chosen.

Nike shoes beginning

The company was founded on January 25, 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports by Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight,[1] and officially became Nike, Inc. on May 30, 1978. The company takes its name from Nike (Greek Νίκη, pronounced [nǐːkɛː]), the Greek goddess of victory. Nike markets its products under its own brand, as well as Nike Golf, Nike Pro, Nike+, Air Jordan, Nike Skateboarding, and subsidiaries including Cole Haan, Hurley International, Umbro and Converse. Nike also owned Bauer Hockey (later renamed Nike Bauer) between 1995 and 2008.[5] In addition to manufacturing sportswear and equipment, the company operates retail stores under the Niketown name.     Nike is a famous sport company in the world, and it was founded by Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman in 1964. The motivation to found Nike Company is Japanese running shoes. In 1962, Phil Knight traveled to Japan after he graduated from Stanford University. He found a Japanese athletic shoes company, Onitsuka Tiger Company during his travelling, and he really likes that company. He believes those shoes will be popular in American market in the future, and it is a good opportunity for him to start a business. Therefore, he made a contract with Onitsuka Tiger Company and imported those shoes into America starting his business. He and his partner Bill Bowerman invested one thousand dollars to fund this business and gave “Blue Ribbon Sports” for Nike Company’s original name. In 1966, Phil and Bill opened the first Blue Ribbon Sports retail s in Santa Monica, California. After a while, their company started to make the profits. In 1971, Carolyn Davidson got paid thirty-five dollars for designing a logo “swoosh” for Blue Ribbon Sports. Also, the swoosh logo started to be printed in the T-shirt product, and it presents the winged goddess’ spirit. Blue Ribbon Sports had about one million dollars for revenue in the end of 1971. In the beginning of 1972, Blue Ribbon sport broke contract with the Japanese Company, Onitsuka Tiger, and it planned to change its name to Nike, which is named from Greek Goddess of Victory. In 1976, Blue Ribbon sport already had $14 million revenue, and for the next year, the revenue became double, 28 million.
