Study Abroad
Essay topic:
Study abroad (advantages and disadvantages)

It is a heated debate about whether students should study abroad or not. Some people argue that students ought to study overseas to develop their careers, as today finding a job has generated a rat race, whereas other people claim that studying abroad can be really expensive and no profitable at all. In this essay I shall delve into both sides.

Many parents and teachers support the idea of encouraging students to live in another country. Firstly, overseas universities may offer better courses and can be more attractive for students' prospective career plans. In this way, the best universities employ teachers who are experts in their fields. Secondly, qualifications gained abroad can open the door to better job opportunities. Many companies value extremely positive if candidates have been living abroad because companies know that this experience prepares people to face and overcome future challenges. It goes without saying that better job means to have a higher salary. Thirdly, overseas students are exposed to new cultures and customs which can enrich their lives as well as broaden their horizons. Finally living and studying in another nation can make you proficient in a new language.

However, some people are against to this experience. They argue that nowadays, students are not adults enough to expose themselves to live abroad. They have to face daily problems such as buying food, paying the cost of living, finding accommodation, sharing a flat with unknown people and son on. They add that living overseas with an unfamiliar environment students can suffer from homesickness. Furthermore, studying in a different language can be a daunting obstacle that many students will not be able to overcome. Finally, they point out that many people after arriving to another nation can suffer from “cultural shock” which is the process to adapt to knew culture and traditions and this can affect students' progress

The critical first step in designing and leading successful large-scale change is to fully understand the dynamics and performance of the enterprise. It’s simply impossible to prescribe the appropriate remedy without first diagnosing the nature and intensity of an organization’s problems. Yet, all too often, senior leaders– particularly those who have just recently assumed their positions or joined a new organization– react precipitously to a presenting set of symptoms. They quickly spot apparent similarities between the new situations they face and problems they’ve solved in the past, and leap to the assumption that what worked before will work again. The imperative to act is understandable but often misguided. Leaders would be well advised to heed the advice of Henry Schacht, who successfully led large-scale change as CEO of both Cummins Engine and Lucent Technologies: Stop, take a deep breath, give yourself some time, and “get the lay of the land” before leaping to assumptions about what should be changed, and how. That’s easier said than done. Without a comprehensive roadmap – a model – for understanding the myriad performance issues at work in today’s complex enterprises, leaders are likely to propose changes that address symptoms, rather than causes. The real issues that underlie an organization’s performance can easily go undetected by managers who view each new, unique set of problems through the well-worn filter of their…

Studying Abroad has become increasingly popular amongst college students - and for good reason. Studying in a different country can not only help students achieve more in their adult lives, but ultimately change their life for the better from the experience. Adaptation and tolerance is one benefit a student can gain from studying abroad. By living first hand in a unfamiliar place in allows you to learn empathy and understanding from those different from you. Independence and Confidence are traits commonly reported from students who have lived this experience. Typically a student will travel alone of with a few other friends, being put into new, sometimes scary situations that will for them to think differently then they may have before. By encountering these differences they are allowed to better understand not only the challenges other countries are put in, but the challenges of our own country and the world as a whole. The Study Aboard experience has also been reported to be helpful for students with their careers, finding jobs and marketing themselves better to potential employers. The approach of traveling to countries in far corners of the world means students can compare the culture and lifestyles of people in very diverse places - and come to understand what makes us all unique, but how truly similar people around the world are.…

ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY: STUDYING IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY IS NOT WORTHWHILE If you have a chance, where would you prefer to study, in a foreign country or in Vietnam? Many argue that studying abroad may come with negative influences such as high cost, culture shock and bad living condition. However, it is my contention that there are many advantages to study abroad that you can never get in Vietnam. Critics of oversea study may say that students studying abroad have to pay high cost for tuition and living. For example, the average cost in Oklahoma, one of lowest cost of living in the US is about 1500$ a month. This is a high cost for Vietnamese people who earn about 500$ to 1000$ on average. There is no denying this; however, students will contact a plenty of advanced educations from the whole world. It means that they can enjoy good and modern facilities. Students study in small classes with from fifteen to twenty students, use modern libraries which have many kinds of books and materials for studying or make experiment in the best labs. Furthermore, students also have a chance to reach the latest academic theories and teaching methods that improve their knowledge a lot. Another argument against studying in foreign countries is that most international students go through is culture shock. When students go to study abroad they are living somewhere very different and may come across many troubles such as different food, religious and local custom. There is some truth in this argument, but study abroad allows you get to learn another culture first-hand. A person's culture reflects very deep perceptions, beliefs, and values that influence his or her way of life and the way that she or he views the world. Students who overcome their culture shock will truly understand where other cultures are coming from and overwhelm them easily. Other critics of studying abroad also claim that in a foreign country most international students are forced to deal with the…

In the course Study Abroad: Learning Through Engagement, I was required to write a reentry report depicting how studying abroad changed me and my perspective on the world. In my report I made the claim that, “Studying abroad is an integral part of higher education.” According to Wayne C. Booth (et al) this claim, though vague, is a practical claim because it first addresses a problem, “caused by some condition in the world,” it contains an ‘undesirable consequence’, of that condition, and to avoid this problem, a call to action for my readers (53-54).…
